I reckon if you buy a DVD and learn one thing from it, that you wouldn't have known, it is worth it.

I got my hands on the Deanian DVD's. I found them to be a bad concept altogether although I did learn a few things from them. Sometimes that's all it takes to open a new door and then you have a whole world of stuff to practice.

You're right Don. These days i tell myself that i have to learn something new every week (something i didn't know anything about before) and try to bring it into my playing.
This week i learnt a couple of fusion licks that have, like, opened up quite a few doors to me.
Things that i kinda couldn't harmonically connect previously are starting to fall into place.

It's funny that, if I learn a new lick I tend to incorporate the technique of what the lick is about into other areas.

For example I got the Lick Library Video's for Surfing with the Alien and For the love of God. I got maybe a minute into each and my playing improved dramatically just from the techniques I practised.

That's the right attitude, AFAIC - no matter what you watch or listen to, there's going to be something to learn, absorb and adapt.

There's a few dvd's that have taught me a lot and still teach me a lot... Like Eric Johnson's "Total electric guitar" and Keb Mo's instructional and Kee Marcello's one. Also Brett Garsed's 2 instructionals worked wonders in my playing, more like an absorbtion over time.... the Erics Johnson one depresses me when I watch it... but then I try something like what I have just seen and it works out for the good.

Unfortunately for me, the speed focus dvd's did nothing for me. Which is sad... I coulda been fast if I paid attention I guess... but the wet poodle puddle they left did nothing for me. Glad you guys got something out of it.

Maybe one day I'll tackle Gambale's 'Concert with Class' and be a fusion poof... but until that time comes I'll have to be content with what i've got... My 6 grey hairs and a strat... oooh, i could write a floyd song, close my eyes... and I'll look just like Dave Gilmour... ? or maybe i'll look like the tard from Goonies... most likely the latter

Agree with you all, and yes Arjun confidence makes one hell of a difference in once playing. I'll check out all the dvd's you guys mentioned. Thanks 2 all!

I want to add one more... but its a taste thing. Buster B Jones... he does what Tommy Emmanuel does... but this instructional is way back in the 80's... the colour is evident too. He's a real gentleman when he plays... any mistake he makes... "Oh, excuse me." Lol, watch it and you'll catch the funny.

But this guy is extremely brilliant... its a country thing... I should mention that its mostly done on nylon as well. Which makes it scarier. He delves into the open string scales country style (Chet Atkins styled runs). Then he demonstrates three songs... one of which is cannonball rag (although I think it has a few names). But yeah, fingerstyle madness or pick and finger madness, your choice in which way to use it.

I'd recommend it to anyone interested in something different but oh so useful. And he does go fast... quite.

Its called a metronome, pick and be merry.

Watching videos about speed is merely eye candy. Rock discipline does the favour of sorting it into sections to make practicing easier. Gambale's teach economy of movement. Joe Stump's dvd teaches how to sound like Yngwie but with bad teeth. Malmsteens dvd's teach you how to sit in front of the screen and not learn anything except the blur technique equivalent to something else teenage boys like doing. Shawn Lane's dvd's teach you about grouping pentatonics into 4, 5, 6, 7 note per click runs for creating unusual lines. Its all an oddball thing. And I think MAB is a tossbag, albeit a fast tossbag.

So if you wanna learn about speed get a metronome and learn string crossing at one note pr string... then two notes per string, then 3 and 4 and 5 per string. It takes time.... a long time. Then you learn string skipping like the very boring Paul Gilbert followed by the uberamazing Nuno Bettencourt. Then after a while you'll have memorised patterns and you include them in your solo's... then one day you click... what if i put this here followed by this instead? And at this point you start thinking that speed is merely one tool in a huge bag of tricks music has.

Then comes the time when you start dissing yourself for all that misspent masturbation on the instrument cos you were misguided into thinking that speed makes you cool, let alone a tool.

METRONOME... good right hand technique (which you learn as time goes on due to realising limitations in your current hand setup) ... then you are gonna be a star. A little one.

This must be the best advice I've seen in a long time. I'm busy now for 3 weeks straight, just using the metronome with scales. It does wonders!!!
