I thought it was brilliant but I am a very crude person?
I
think most musicians are ? I recently watched a movie called Serbian Film with two of my closest friends (both musicians - Bassist & Guitarist) and we laughed the entire way through the movie...It's meant to be one of the most twisted movies out at the moment and has been banned in tons of countries, and we thought it was the funniest thing we've seen in about 3 years ? Musicians minds aren't wired normally, and this is a good thing.
Well, I haven't seen it but the raping of newborns, raping of drugged family members, raping raping raping sounds a bit much to me. There's 3 reasons why it's not my cup of tea:
1. Doesn't have much to say other than what the director "says" it's about after the fact. This is the biuggest charge levelled at it. If I can't tell the movie is about the repression of Serbian people by the government by watching it, then what you see on screen is all there is. I own Clockwork Orange, have seen Cannibal Holocaust twice not to mention all sorts of other stuff... but there is at least an easily read messages there.
2. When you have been around the block a bit and have had to deal with people that have been through or perpetrate this kind of stuff it's a lot more sinister when you see it on screen. (If you have kids, tolerance also drops).
3. Hmmm... can't remember the third.
Maybe you were laughing because of Serbian production values but I doubt the director intended it to be funny.
In short, don't lump all musos into the same basket.
Notice the bolded part? It means I think they are, not know...All the ones I do know are though and that's something I'd prefer ? So there's no need to jump on the defensive.
As for the movie, yes a newborn baby gets raped, yes he rapes his seven year old son, yes he rapes some woman and chops off her head with a machete during this act. Until you've seen it though don't comment cause it really is just mindless gore pushed to it's extreme. There was nothing warped and twisted about it, it was blatant and in your face. I couldn't find it disturbing cause it was badly executed and quite B grade, I laughed so hard the whole way through because of how ludicrous they make everything. As for your points:
1. Yeah this is why I thought it was so funny, they tried to turn it into some commentary on Serbia and they tried to make it disturbing but it's just too weak and b grade and impossible to believe.
2. I haven't been around the block and haven't dealt with anything like this or people that have been through anything similar, because it's a far fectched bunch of crap. I'm sure child rape etc happens, but in this movie it's all just too unbelievable. In the scene you were refering to where the newborn gets raped it takes the mother less than 5 minutes to give birth...I mean seriously...
3. Yes I was definitly laughing because of the production, but it was a fairly high budget film. It was more just how far the director seemed to go to try and include every possible disgusting, messed up and slightly taboo thing he could. It honestly would have been a more twisted movie if they had toned it down a hell of a lot more, the first weird movie moment was brilliant in the way they depicted the paedophilic aspect of it and then from there people were getting killed with machetes etc and it became a comedy.
In short, I didn't lump all musos in the same basket. At the end where I said musicians minds aren't wired normally, that was a blanket statement. Really though they're not, I'm not saying they're all a bunch of sick f***s but I don't think they're normal, maybe not even excentric but the way in which they relate to the world through music adds a different perspective to them.
