U2 this weekend in jhb and NOT an excited word on the forum ???

wow i'm surprised that with U2 being here in jhb this weekend and there's no excited posts re going to see them , or are they just not flavour of the month for this forum ? damn they prob the biggest act and live show to hit these shores since the stones ......... just the spectacular of the live show should be enough to get performers excited even if it's not the edge's guitar style ........ i have seen them live at just a normal /less spectacular show but even tho i was not a huge fan they blew me away live , they really put everything into a performance .......... so anyway unfortunately i have to do gigs on sunday at sun city but i would love to have seen this concert .....

Correct. Now there has been many negative opininions about U2 and Bonobo in particular. I don't see how any of it was against the rules. I didnt see any egrarious flaming or not BEING NICE. As is natural for human discourse, it digressed into debates about Bonobo's sincerity, the relative morality of other prominent swinging dicks and whatnot.

While a lot of it has limited bearing on U2 themselves, much of the derision is targeted at Bonobo. And all of it relevant to why or why not you want to go see them or not. This forum is the most easy-going Ive been a member of, and the deletion of these posts strikes me as nonsensical and out of character. A bit of four-legs-goodery if you will, even.

IMO the deleted posts was a good thing, it would only have lead to personal and political and what not things that could have ended up in stupid little arguments about something entirely stupid.
So I guess the mods' intent was to avoid this and keep us all a happy fandamely.

i think the mods on the forum are worried that if Bono found out we said nasty things about him, then none of us would get into heaven.

One thing to understand about GFSA is that, in fact, it's not a democracy or some kind of anything goes forum. It's the property of two individuals - Norio and Alan - and they set down the rules. Alan put it quite nicely recently, saying it's their house so when we come in here we play by their rules. Now I've fallen foul of the rules before. Sometimes that's been expected (EG this thread), sometimes not, but I understand that that's the way it is. Their house, their rules. They have the power and they decide where the lines get drawn.

The rules do explicitly forbid political discussion and certainly once we got on to the matter of THAT OTHER SONG we were heading into that territory and I'm not that surprised that the posts around that issue got deleted.

There is no absolute freedom of speech here, and there's no pretence that we do have absolute freedom of speech.

Sure, but thats a perspective on why the mods COULD do it, not why they DID do it. Look, I'm not objecting in any way, if I ran a forum it would also be on my terms. I personally just didnt find anything out of spec with what had been posted and some clarification would be welcome (and the thread was cleaned up before any mention of THAT song).
I'll add that I'm desensitized to heated debates, having been a member of secular forums for years, so for me the discussion was extremely mild.

I think that's kinda Bob's point. The level of debate on this forum is kept at a much cooler temperature than on many others. Generally we kind of get the culture here (although things may be changing as the active membership increases), and the mods only step up to the braai with their cup of water when the flames very occasionally shoot up.

Not really. My point is that this is the house that Alan and Norio built. Their house. Their rules. Like it or lump it.

Also I note that the moderators are, in fact, human ? and they can't read all threads all the time or automagically know about every post or any questioning of matters on policy. They can, of course, be PMed.
