Bono is helping himself ... when U 2 have to put their money where their mouth is they move the operation to Netherlands to evade taxes.
U2 are a business. Their staff goes beyond the members of the band. There's a manager, sound guys they retain, key support personnel. They all have to be paid and it's quite correct for what I shall refer to as "U2 Incorporated" to maximise their profits so that they can pay all their employees.
Of the four members of U2 only two are engaged in high-profile philanthropic work, and even then there is little overlap between the two sets of concerns and projects. Presumably they all do what they want with their personal share of U2 Incorporated's income.
Bono and Edge certainly have revenue streams other than the band.
U2's money is not the same as Bono's money.
Bono is not altruistic imho..he is an attention grabbing whore .... this is completely my opinion of course
This is the thing, and it's something that Bono himself has alluded to. He gets lots of publicity over his various philanthropic activities, and that seems to upset people. Bono's stance seems to be "so what? The job got done and a difference got made." OF COURSE he gets publicity. If he goes to McDonald's that will be splashed all over the papers.
I am often struck by the pseudo-liberalism of many people who see themselves as rock 'n rollers. We're actually a conservative bunch really. I think it's telling that Bono gets more derision over attempts (misguided or not) to bring about a positive change in the world than Eric Clapton did for making a racist speech at a concert.
