what are your musical goals?

hi ya all....... this is a poll to see where the musical goals and motivations lie with you all

i've always believed that one needs goals to be set to allow one to progress and invertably mark ones progress........

also i have never yet met a musician who is happy to stagnate at the musical level they are ..... and likewise i have never met a musician who records something then can listen back a few months later and be happy cos we constanly grow

also this post is to encourage guitarists to set a goal if they have not ........cos quite often one only finds out where the "chinks in ones armour" is when you try and get something done musically , so what i'm saying a guitarist can practise scales and modes in his/her bedroom for years and be competant at it but will battle to apply it in the "real" world of music either recording or onstage ........so what i'm suggesting is that apart from just dreaming about doing something musical , set a goal and achieve it ...... it needn't be unachievable tho...... but goals one see's as being possibly a challenge to achieve but achievable........ thats why there's no box to tick that says "having guthrie govan open for me " :D

and feel free to discuss your choices and goals....... the idea is to inspire yourself and others to become better guitarists

whats the diffrence between option 2 and option 3 ??

both seem to pertain to playing live for money whilst holding another job.. what diffrence does it make is its original or cover stuff you playing?

Well, i would just love to be able to play, and to be able to play well!
Maybe even one day play at a open mic night or something!

original vs cover repetoire has a huge impact on the band/what venues one can perform at /audiences attitude towards the band/creativity ect ect ......... and prob should be a thread all on it's own .......... but the short answer is really asking do you want to create your own music and perform it (original) or are you happy to just copy songs from your "hero's and perform it ....... it's a personal choice no right or wrong answer and as i said you free to tick both box's if you so feel

Norman pretty much speaks for me.

That said, when I was a kid I was captivated by the amiga demo scene and followed it all the way through its rebirth on the PC to the amazing demos to be found today. It is what inspired me to become a programmer, and I fondly remember the long hours spent agonising with fasttracker and scream tracker, and I churned out quite a few nice IMHO tracks, mostly technoish shit but it always had a symphonic feel. I never learned to play an instrument, my computer was my art, my muse and the tool of my expression. Ive always had the music in me, but it never had a proper outlet. There was always something else that I wanted to focus on. NO MORE.

I'm going for semi- pro, because I love my painting too much to give it up. Both express who I am, and they feed off each other too. I also love teaching and after a few years of teaching little children I found the fun in teaching music. I would be sad to give that up, I feel so exhilarated after giving a lesson. I'm happy to say I'm the teacher I wanted when I was young. And I'm also happy that I'm composing music that makes me HAPPY to perform. I've spent too many nights performing music that made no impact on me, or that was just too introspective. I also wanted the means to record myself and I've achieved that (to some degree) too. So this is a success story, I set my goals and I've realized most of them and am in the process of realizing the rest. I would also add to the list becoming successful in the art of music business. Being able to manage and promote yourself (and watch your back) is a skill that I think goes hand in hand with being a professional musician.

ONE DAY ? lol! I still suck! I can put a few chords together now, a little bit more fluently than before, but nowhere near where most of you guys are at!

hey Viccy teaching music to kids or painting are not things one needs to give up to be a pro muso..........if fact teachng is common amongst many pro muso's so maybe you should rather pick pro muso .....if you teaching science or math thats different.........

The other day I was sitting in the lounge, noodling with the strat plugged into my lil' ampito. Now, the missus and I have a thing for cats, especially neglected/abandoned ones. We currently have four cats, two of which are kittens, the one was picked up from the SPCA and the other one (a black one we interchangeably call Lucy Fur/Basement Cat) was found on the kerb outside, close to death.

As I was noodling, in my concentration I hadn't noticed that Basement Cat decided that the textile covering on my amp was lovely for digging nails into. The volume knob on the axe was turned all the way down....

You can probably guess what I did. ?

A sudden Em can be very cruel, but extremely effective. All the cats give it a wide berth now.

At the moment, my goal is to be able to get thorugh an entire song without messing up. Quite far from playing for someone else or in front of an audience, but I'll get there.......hopefully ?

My more immediate goal is just to be able to play a song! lol!

Though... I can pretty much play along to:

prime circle - As long as i am here, EXTREMELY easy, its only 3 notes through the whole song! ?
the monkees -Im a believer, also pretty easy, just the chorus is slightly weird...
staind - everything changes, also not too difficult...
the cranberries - Linger... Though im struggling a little with the strumming pattern... (If anyone wants to give me an idea?! nudge nudge wink wink)
Oh, and ATB - dont stop! But only if i slow it down by 10% !

Lastly, my own tune that im composing... just chords, no licks or anything like that! or lyrics even!

and thats pretty much my song repertoire at the moment!

Well Im studying Law (talk about a massive thing to fall back on haha). But in terms of my guitaring, I'd like to be one of the top transitional guitarist in Stellenbosch (transitional between Rock and Jazz) and my general place of domicile . And in terms of career. Well who wouldn't love to play Wembley Stadium ?

How long have you been playing for? By the look of things you've made quite some progress!
