In one word: Yes.
Sure you can sound good on practically anything if you know what you're doing. But you'll just sound so much better on a better instrument.
We often tell ourselves that the expensive stuff isn't that much better ... we have to do that because we can't afford it. And as they say, 90% of the price difference between the super high end and the high end is for a 10% improvement. But as Andy McGibbon says, that last 10% is what makes all the difference.
You get used to what you're playing and often don't realise how much more playable a guitar could be. I've been dismissive of the supposed better playability of super expensive guitars, only to have to eat humble pie.
If you're used to playing a R2 000 guitar, prepare to experience an epiphany if you ever get your hands on a R40 000 one.

Well? I own a cheap strat clone, and there's not really much to complain about apart from a few niggles that I've sorted or that still need work, such as a buzzing fret or two. All in all I'm quite satisfied with it, in the end the guitar's quality far exceeds my own, and isnt that the truly important bit?
What new, expensive guitar doesnt need fiddling with? Does a new guitar exist today that destroys the efforts of even the most talented player?
