Had a conversation with the missus about this last night. Lets say you developed a bad, irreversible medical condition that destroyed either your eyesight or your hearing. Most people would probably consider the latter as the lesser of two evils, without even thinking twice.
This forum however is made up of individuals who glorify the beauty of sound, so it might be a more difficult question to answer. What say you?

There is so much noise in the world today, and the signal-to-noise ratio is swinging ever closer to the "noise" side of the scale. I could earn a living doing what I do without hearing and I'd have rather less noise to deal with, so I'd consider losing hearing as the lesser of those two evils.

I like the way you put this.

well I'd like to keep both for the moment still, but it is known that you can feel the vibrations of music (ala balloon in oprahouse) and I've seen somewhere there is also an invention out there with a camera in a pair of shades connected to something in your brain that made the blind person (guinea pig) see a black and white image, i.e. light objects=white, the rest black, and he could aparently distinguish between shapes (trees, buildings, etc.).
Taken from regular eyesight thats alot of downgrade, but it's a hell of an upgrade from pitchblack, so maybe technology will develop faster on that front.
Also, well developed eyesight still only makes you observe a portion of your surroundings at any given time, while well developed hearing (man some of these blind dudes are amazing) lets you observe and be much more aware of your closest surroundings at 360 degrees.
A difficult choice, if you have to choose oneday, but I think I'd rather lose my eyesight. For me the rule XRBob stated about noise aplies to sight aswell to me, rubish all over the show, polotion, starvation, etc. not things I like to see. You could argue that you can go and experience the beauty of nature in some parts still, but at those same places there isn't noise and the ambience sounds amazing. So it comes down to what you'd prefer, to see the stars and the sunrise or hear the rain and the birds sing.... Too difficult a choice still, thank you very much, I'll keep both then ?

Goodbye sight = really difficult life but i can still jam and enjoy all the stuff i enjoy now.
Goodbye hearing=pointless life.
Decision made then i guess..

i'm with Bob on this one , if it had to be one rather hearing than sight ............or how about a compromise , blind in one eye and deaf on one side ?
but yeah loss of sight means no reading/movies(with subtitles) / driving/ watching sunsets /seeing my partner ...
sure music would be a huge loss and a loss of my current passion ........ but nothing lasts forever ? then i'd simply paint as an artistic outlet and be just as satisfied artistically

saw a documentary the other day where some researcher had made software that converted live video into a series of polyphonic beeps. A blind woman was shown with webcam, laptop and headphones 'looking' out a car window while driving. She could describe the scenery better than I could have. The point is, give it a few years and I will prefer blind over deaf.

Theres been many peeks at this thread but only a handful of replies. What do I make of that? That its indeed a much more difficult Q for musos than for 'muggles'? Or that peeps dont like pondering these hectic topics? Or is it simply a kuck topic? ?

You used a big word in the topic title.

ya but I balanced it out with 'A'.

It should be a pretty clear cut answer for musos... shouldn't it?
It is for me.

What really surprised me was Keira and Bob's answers. I never would have guessed that.

That's just it - it doesn't seem to be clear cut for musos.

Not quite the same, but the question of whether one would prefer to date the deaf or the blind was asked on Seinfeld:
JERRY: You know, I think, I would rather date the deaf.
ELAINE: Uh hu.
JERRY: Because I think the blind would probably be a little messier around the house. And lets face it they're not going to get all the crumbs. I'd possibly be walking around with a sponge.
GEORGE: You see I disagree. I'd rather be dating the blind. You know you could let the house go. You could let yourself go. A good looking blind woman doesn't even know you're not good enough for her.
ELAINE: I think she'd figure it out.
