I've known about this for a long while now. Been trying to make a plan to move closer to work. As it is, it will cost me R1040 per month to travel from home to work each day - or R52 per day. Scary. ???

It's just plain daylight robbery under the guise of reducing emissions, lowering congestion and using the funds to maintain the roads. Talking about reducing emissions is rich coming from a country that generates power from coal-fired power stations - and they're building two more! Same with the emissions tax on new cars. A pathetic and transparent attempt at using the motorists as a cash cow. And they get away with it because they're the government. >☹

Saying it will reduce congestion is like saying that decapitating yourself will negate the need to shave. :? Forcing people who can't afford the tariffs onto the back roads will indeed mean a less congested highway, but will cause the virtual destruction of the road infrastructure in the suburbs and in the city by sheer weight of vehicle numbers using the roads. Roads that aren't designed for the level of traffic they're about to support. Considering how well the government does at maintaining the roads now, I shudder to think what the back roads will look like in a few years. Plus anywhere but the highway will become gridlock.

We pay fuel levies and taxes for the roads to maintained. Using the funds for road maintenance? Where is the other money earmarked for this purpose going?

We're paying the debts the government incurred upgrading the highways for the World Cup, which they should have been doing anyway as the highways couldn't handle the traffic volumes. Ridiculous.

Hopefully this will convince some companies to allow employees to work from home, even if it is just a few days a week.

But yeah, ridiculous. Most people working in Joburg and living in Pretoria will be taking R1000+ a month on this.

The back roads are going to become a nightmare as mentioned.

//Edit: This should also be mentioned. It is the time schedule for peak vs. off-peak.

I don't know how true this is, but rumour has it that some companies may consider moving their operations out of JHB altogether as a result of this tolling debacle. What happens to freight and courier companies operating costs? If they are going to cut peoples legs off like that they should at least have a safe reliable and cheap alternative mode of transport. Glad I live in KZN

they just dug up our emergency helipad at work and tarred it over for extra parking. there goes my plan. guess i'll just catch a big yellow taxi from now on.

I just read an article that it'll be capped at R450/month. Still hefty but not quite the R1k+ that most people have thought they'd pay.

You guys have to fight this - otherwise, they'll just expand it countrywide. It'll especially affect small towns (like mine) where everything is transported in by road. It'll also seriously affect courier costs (so if you buy things across the country in the classifieds or do any online shopping...).

I think the only reason there hasn't been major unrest over this is the common man in the street hasn't realised how much it will affect him. If they did, the unions would probably have 'em out in force...

Dont you people listen to the radio? There has been a lot of mention made of the R450. There has been a lot of noise from the unions. There have been court cases over the past couple of years.

And tell me please, how do we fight it? OK, I wont get the tag and they will have to come and get their money. And when they do should I say ok rather take me to jail because I wont pay? Then again, after it gets going on 3 December, there may be every chance in the world that it gets lifted or something just beofre the elections next year. Only to be slapped back a short while after of course.
