Hey guys,
I just want to get your thoughts on the difference between the two pedals. I've done some research regarding the difference between the two MXR phase pedals. I bought myself some pedals yesterday (Boss DD-7, MXR Phase 90 and Korg pitchblack tuner). When I ordered the Phase 90 pedal, I was looking at the MXR EVH model, but didn't specify that, that was the one i wanted. So I got the normal Phase 90. Now I would just like to know that is the EVH model worth the exchange? Its R600 more, so that might play a small role in my decision.
A lot of people said the EVH is better than the normal phase 90, because of the script button etc. Then others say that doing the "R28" mod will improve the normal phase 90. I know amps also play a big part in the sound. I currently play with the Orange thunderverb 50 and 2x12 cab. My epiphone also has the SD JB pickup (which is kinda trebly and midy). I havent tested the pedal yet (i know its kinda pointless asking you guys before i even tested it with my setup - I was just to busy yesterday to test it) but if its unanimous that I should get the EVH model, I need to order it tomorrow.
Please if someone has some feedback, that will be greatly appreciated!!!!
PS - im only looking at these phase pedals for time being and not any others even though they might be a lot better...

I've had both. These days I sell them, so be advised I should be assumed to be biased, evil and bent on relieving you of your money. ? I am joking on all counts. ?
The regular Phase 90 does cause a slight bump in your output level when engaged which some loathe and others love (I liked it - helped the effect stand out in the mix live), whereas the EVH doesn't do this. The phase effect is deeper and more pronounced than the EVH, while the EVH is smoother (even on the non script setting) and more subtle sounding, especially on the script setting. After I switched to the EVH I came to love it's subtle character as well.
The R28 mod on the regular Phase 90 was tried by a user on the forum, shadow1. Perhaps do a search or send him a PM about his thoughts on it. I haven't tried it myself, but I do recall him saying it smoothed out the tone quite a bit.
For an in your face version of the classic Phase 90 tone go with the regular M101 (Matt Bellamy from Muse prefers this one for instance), whereas if you want a smoother, more subtle, vintage version of the Phase 90, go with the EVH. The paint job's pretty cool too.

YES!!! been a while since I have been on the forum.
I got the phase 90 and was not too happy with it. Especially the "grit" it added to my tone.
I did the r28 MOD as it was reversable and now i LOVE the pedal, to be honest I think it will never leave my board. it smoothes out the tone, removes the grit and makes the effect alot more subtle and "warm" ....
I would say do the MOD and I am very sure you will love the pedal from there...

Thanks for the replies guys. I did test the phaser last night. I was bracing myself for an awful tone, but it came out fine. I dont think its necessary for me to pay R600 just to get the EVH model. I dont know, the phaser is not gonna be my main effect, so I think that i'll stick with it for now.
Maybe I will get the R28 mod done, and then i'll be fine. Thanks alot for the help.
PS - shadow, where did u get the mod done? I live in stellenbosch, don't know where i can take it....
Thx

SMuts, its a real easy MOD, just clip one little "leg" of a "transistor" and thats it...
Can do it yourself very easily.
