Left handed Guitarist thread

Hi MY intention with this thread is to A) find out all the lefties on this site and B) Place reviews of equipment/books/dvd's etc and C) discuss any possible hassles and solutions us lefties have and D) general sinister banter where us lefties can actually extoll the virtues of being superior after all God only made so many perfect the rest he made right handed. No one has conclusively proved the cause of left handedness and about 10% of the world's population are left handed. There appears to be some evidence indicating a brain defect (i use the term defect loosely as it should be enhancement not defect) that causes left handedness. Lefty's are overrepresented in sporting codes where hand eye cordination is required as well as in academic circle however it appears lefties are also overrepresented in loony bins and tend to die on average 9 years younger than righties.... Lefty guitarists are numerous (those that play lefty an not righty) including the great hendrix, iommi ,mccartney,cobain, albert king Then you also get the phenomonon of lefties playing with the string upside down as well. i suspect that lefties are probably overrepresented in this area as well but many play right handed. So without further ado let the thread continue.

i took my lil lad to go an watch the muppet movie the other day and something struck me square between the eyes.... all the muppets playing musical instruments are left handed .......interesting so resolved to google this and the results are very interesting...

puppetteers who are right handed an "puppeteer" right handed will have left handed characters ....interesting this. thats the condensed version, google if the subject interests you.

your pop sample must mean that the facts are wrong around the 10% and in fact its 30%... i will ask the experts to change their analysis immidiately cos stu said it is in fact 30% and we should not let the facts get in the way of stu's observations.

Don't forget, Grant's brother Heathe is a left handed guitarist, one of the best you'll ever see.
So, Grants had many years working on lefty guitars, you definitely chose the correct guitar tech. ?

The subject of right-handed left-handers and left-handed right-handers has come up on GFSA before.

The classic musical example is Paul McCartney who plays guitar and bass left-handed but does everything else (including playing drums) right-handed.

There must be a fair sprinkling of left-handed right-handers in the world of classical music - everybody in orchestra plays as if they're right-handed. If they didn't then violin players would be taking each other's eyes out or getting their bows tangled.

Why would a competent tech struggle to set up a southpaw guitar? I recently had Jed at Music Connection set my acoustics up, and he does everything with gauges and straight edges and a method like that should work on left and right handed guitars.

UNLESS it's the angle that you look at them, the way your work bench is set out etc etc. Is Grant left handed?

I'm a lefty that plays guitar righty.

I just started playing that way on all my friends guitars and it stuck.
Might be why I tend to struggle with finger picking.

We look at it the other way.
You are right handed, but the first guitar you encounter is a lefter, so you end up doing everything right handed except you play the guitar left, concievable?

Well I think it's what happens to a lot of lefties. The guitars in the stores are made for righties. The tuition books are written out for righties. Most of the players you see are righties and most of your friends you look too for tuition are righties.

The interesting case is Jimi Hendrix who could play left or right and would even play left-handed on guitars strung for a right-handed player - and always play well.
