Are you denying that Jimmy Page did not have say on what happened in that band, do you think John Paul Jones had much say, especially when they left him off the lineup on some reunion shows in the 80's.....
OR do you think Ringo had much of a say???
In the ways of Wilco, Jeff Tweedy pretty much rules with an iron claw....
Queens of the Stoneage, do you deny Josh homme does not run that, notice how he could even kck out the other founding member of the band... Or even when he was in Kyuss Brant Bjork talks of him beinga complete ass, and control freak.....
Do you deny the The Mars Volta is not run by Omar
Who do you think controls the smashing pumpkins? A hint is his first name begins with a B... C.......
There is no democracy in most these bands...... there is a key member or two (often fighting) that are essential, and without that essential element the band is often not that good.....
there maybe exceptions to this but actually the again I cant think of one group who does not have a essential factor. who ever so subtly controls
It's pretty well documented that Paul and John were the creative force behind most of the Beatles' output, with George getting the odd look-in. So, dictatorship...no.
Page was certainly the band leader with Zep, but it's very telling that they chose not to replace Bonham and decided to disband rather than continue without him. So, dictatorship...no.
Queen (and not Queens of the Stone Age) - four very accomplished songwriters and musicians who ALL penned hits with the band. Brian May's Red Special and distinctive playing was always as much a part of the sound as Freddie's soaring vocals. So, dictatorship...no.
I'm not sure why you bothered elaborating upon other bands which I didn't dispute.
My whole point is that there is not only one way to do things. Some bands have a single creative driving force or decision maker, others don't. Simple.
Warren I am afraid we are gonna have to leave this one disagreeing.
Led Zepplin, from what I have read, were pretty much at the mercy of Jimmy Page, looking forth to see if he approved.
Queen while yes each one of them wrote a hit single or two, I am pretty sure they were motivated by Brian May, and from again the few books I have read he controlled the groups direction
As for the Beatles, George Harrison yes, great guitarist, but he by no means had the Balls to dictate where that group went... That was a war between Paul, and John
As for the other groups, they just beack my belief that a band is not democratic, its a dictatorship of a few, there may be exceptions, but I dont believe giving evryone free reighn artistically makes great music, I think roles are needed, and I further think history shows us this is what happens....
But hey thats just my understanding of it.....
