Anyone own a PRS? What made you choose that over a Gibson or the equivalent?
I used to hate PRS, untill I saw the Opeth - Lamentations DVD where Michael Akerfeldt was playing a Custom 24 I think [ that fat warm smooth sound..mmmmmmm ]. Even the Cradle of Filth guitarist's purple SE one makes me weak in the knees....
There it is...my secret is out, but seriously, how do you guys find the ease of playing, sound and build on a PRS? I've played one, but it was a SE model. Anyone played one of the expensive ones.

I had a thing against PRS until I played my friends CE 24. I was blown away. It was really comfortable and sounded great.

Beautiful instruments and much better wood, build and setup quality than the Gibsons in the same price bracket.
Unfortunately, I've never really bonded with one (and at one point, I really wanted to - they're so pretty). They mostly seem a little soulless, without a distinct personality of their own. Also, the scale length - while a little longer than a Gibson is still too short for me, as I've always played on 25.5".

That's the thing I was wanting to say but couldn't put into words...They are soulless....although still on my list for "eendag as ek groot is"

I was gassing for a Custom 24, but after trying it out at Andy Mcgibbons, I realised that the LP shape and neck was more my thing. I guess it's up to the individual and yes they do have some really awesome finishes.
I don't think you'd go wrong with one. I know a guy who has a custom 22 and it sounds awesome.

I'd love the PRS custom 24 but I don't really have 42k to blow on a guitar.
Spend half that and you can practically make any guitar you want ?
But that PRS looks and sounds amazing.

I've gotten to play on many PRS models and I agree with Alan for the most part but I did find something in the John Highland signatures low end smoothness and warmth really did it for me. Also the custom 24 we have at Bothners is quite remarkable and the hollowbody Mcarty model also had a very relaxing warm characteristic to it. Though I doubt I'd really like to marry down to one over a nice RG...
The necks are quite nice in a sense that they're not too thin and not too unpleasantly chunky in fact if you've ever played on a Cort KX model you might feel like you're in similar ground. I once heard a certain PRS enthusiast state however that even their les paul copies sound nothing like Les Pauls and instead tonally could be compared more to a thru-neck Ibanez with a bit more low end and I personally agree with that statement ?
As for the wood, I think it's just criminal that you don't see tops like that on any of the higher priced Ibanez models...then again I think that if you did any carpets near them would make a slosh sound when you stepped on them owing to the obvious build up of drool, in fact if you've ever stepped into the room in plumstead bothners where the PRS' are kept you'll notice the wet spot in the right corner ? that was me ?
