Went to Marshall today, and I thought I would be spontaneous and try out a new pick
Now my standard picks are the Dunlop Tortex usually between .88 - 1.0, now I decided to try the 'jazz' pick. My goodness does this thing rock, its tiny, its red, and it has a sharp edge. Its known as the Dunlop Jazz III. Playing with my other picks feel so big, and bulky right now, its like I am a caveman with those picks. I like this jazz one, how and why does such a cheap (actually not really) little piece of plastic change so much.

Manfred taught me about those.
He's a wise man ?

I love these picks for playing lead, but I find a pick with a larger surface area is more comfortable for Rhythm playing...
Warren
For the longest time I used the same picks, only the Tortex version.
I've since switched to the larger ones, since I've found that for alternate picking I get a firmer grip, and they're also a lot easier for rhythm playing. In short, they just seem more versatile.

I went and got myself a variety of sharkfins the other day. Boy, what an improvement over the hard toilet seats provided with the axe! My favourite atm is the pink one, the thinnest. I suspect it's because it is more forgiving when you make a mistake - the string isnt attacked as hard. Good or bad thing? PS what are the little niblet thingies on the top edge for.
ezietsman
Oh no. The sharkfins got him!
soft picks are bad. You don't have control and they bend and wobble. Most experienced players use a fairly stiff pick because you can play loudly and softly with it. Impossible with soft ones. You don't learn picking dynamics using soft picks. My advice, get rid of the soft ones, maybe all the sharkfins. Get something like dunlop tortex or jazz iii of around 1.0 mm.

Been using them for a while, once you get used to them there is no turning back ?

my first pick was a jazz III.. ? i still like them a lot, but they are a little too far ahead on the control scale for me, especially for what i mainly play. atm i'm playing with a brown tortaloid fender jobbie. the heavy one. excellent pick. its quite thin, i'd probably say bout .6m, but its stiff as hell.

Great. I'm not alone ?
Yea I've seen some insane picks, I once got this pic that was the size of a doritos chip, it was huge. I think it must be for bassists. Also I'm not a fan of those super hard and thick picks mostly used by metal guitarist. I find them too bulky. Although respect to those who have the skill
Tonedef - I think start with Tortex man, they a good brand. I literally have like 40 all around. The sharkfins are meh :-\ Try dem green ones
But can you guys believe, R6 a pick hey. I remember the day when they were like R2. Anyway, let me practice more with my Jazz III ?

When I started playing I only used Sharkfins, but it was very hit and miss for me when I was learning to alternate pick. I also found that if I had it the wrong way round it would bugger up my playing, it gives the illusion of being able to pick more precisely (imo) but when I had an off day, boy I had an off day! I have been using a green .88 Dunlop tortex for the past couple of months and the difference is unbelievable, also for 6 bucks ?

When I started playing guitar about two years back I believed that there was only ONE pick. The Shark fin. Not by choice. But by ignorance. ?

I used those when I first started playing. I liked them for a bit but I like to have room to move and what not.

Been playing nearly 15 years and I still use a sharkfin (a red one no less), I use the ridge part for picking and the pointy bit for more full strumming rhythm stuff .... maybe that's why I'm still rubbish :-[
guidothepimmp
picks have always been a strange one for me... I used to lurve my jim dunlop .42mm...
then I was into the sharkfin red. Then i decided i liked the stiffer white ones... now i play this hard as hell little pick called a stubby or something like that ???

Ah you have found the light. We have discussed picks on a couple of threads. I don't think any other type of pick gets as much mention as a Dunlop Jazz III. They make a Tortex version called the H3 but As JFJ onced mentioned Tortex is psychologically slippery.
Lethe
They've released the Jazz III with improved grip now. I prefer them more than the standard Jazz III.
Banditman
I love the red Jazz III XLs. It's nice to try other picks from time to time (I find that I sometimes like using medium-heavy celluloids for softer stuff), but the Jazz remains my "go to".

This thing is so small I'm battling to get my fingers to hold it. It's great though, I feel like I stumbled upon Gandalfs staff ?
Tonedef
Lol! YOU SHALL NOT PASS! Its not the size of your pick, its how you use it.
Heh, bad cliches outta the way, then. Had my first lessons yesterday, and my tutor also cautioned me against the sharkfins. Funny, he was using what I immediately recognised as a jazz 3, too, from the pic posted in the op. This forum rocks!

Ever noticed how hard it is to make your own pick? A couple late nights I have found myself turning the house upside down to find just one pick, and then, in desperation hacking into anything plastic with my girlfriends sewing scissors (sssh it wasn't me...) like a DVD cover or a lunchbox with no lid... Nothing seems to work. That's why I *try* to keep as many as I can in my guitar case but man these things enjoy disappearing on me.
