hi ya all....... ok i'm pretty clued up on the acoustic side of things but recently i been getting into the electric jazz scene..... and the jazz box i use is way cool and great pickup.... now i have recently (yesterday ) bought an ESP Ltd EC 100 QM ( basically a PRS single cut copy with a beautiful quilted maple top... ) as i want to turn this into a project guitar for myself...and gonna convert it into a travel guitar ....... .. i need a hobby ?....
now i assume this guitar is setup and the ESP pickups in it are more aimed at rock........ but that neck is awesome and i want to replace the neck pick up with a jazz sounding pickup.... basically must have much lower output cos i get a jazzier tone when i back off on the volume of the neck pickup which is in there.... and roll off almost all the tone
so whats available out there ??? and what gets that fat warm jazz tone....do the affordable pickup makers like tone riders make something i should look at ......... i don't want a set but just one , i assume humbucker but not even sure of that ...... this is where you clued up guys come in
i'm looking for that fat old jazz tone not a fusion jazz tone ........ and i know that a solid body and in fact a NO body guitar can get that tone ....
this video shows a travel guitar that gets fabulous jazz tone. this is the sound i'm looking for ..so if they can get that tone without a body then ..sure once i cut up this guitar and use mostly only the neck i would want to get a similar tone ..but can't seem to find out exactly what pickup this guitar uses .and only reason i just don't buy that jazzstar guitar is i don't like it's look it's too space age and too minimalist ... i want my travel guitar to have a little shape ....but this instrument is sound wise what i want

You'll typically want a fat alnico 2 bucker. In the Tonerider range, the Rocksong will most likely get muddy on the bass or rhythm stuff. The A2 classic could fit the bill, keeping a better tone for when you roll the treble down. But have you considered the Rebel 90s? We all know P90s just shout jazz me up ?
I think another vital thing is what value capacitor you use on the tone. Personally I would wire it up so it had a mini toggle so you can test which value works best for you. Not too difficult to do it temporarily, just pop the volume pot into the cavity and run 2 wires outside to a switch, figure out which you like best and have that wired in permanently ?

Hell this old guy can certainly play! Lovely tone! Do keep in mind that the amp plays a major part too. Typical medium output humbucker sound.
+1 MikeM !
I would go further and recommend the Alnico 4 set. I've played a fellow forum member's Ibanez Artcore semi-hollow jazz guitar recently and the tone was almost identical to this. He has the Tonerider alnico 4 set in there.
