Isis basically gave the example that it's mainly in the hands (specifically regarding Per, I was wondering about his tone, quite interesting info).
I still use my first electric (Fat Strat Squier) on a regular basis as a practice guitar.

Maybe you should take some time to consider whether or not swapping the pickups are going to be worth the money. I can almost promise you the change will not be as drastic as you expect. Personally I think people overestimate the difference that the pickups are going to make. Two of my favorite players (Per Nilsson and Ihsahn) use the stock pickups of whatever guitar they play.
I'm willing to bet that almost no one can guess what pickups are used by a player in a proper blind experiment. Granted, crappy pickups can degrade your signal and affect your tone, but generally this does not seem to be the case.
Not agreeing with you 100% there, might not make it sound like a Suhr but I think it will sound better.
Also, paying 1K to put in new pups (toneriders in this price range) is not much, this what
I would do if I had 1K lying around.
Either way, enjoy the guitar and enjoy playing. 8)
