Percussive Acoustic Piece

This is where I am headed, hopefully.

Here is a very simple percussive acoustic piece of music which that shakes my tree.

What Petrucci, Guthrie, Shawn Lane, Broderick do for the metal heads, this kind of playing does it for me , Acoustic Shred???

The Taylor doesn't sound half bad either ?

Yeah no dude, Guthrie Govan and Shawn Lane are fusion players - they appeal to far more than just metal players, as for Petrucci he can also play mean fusion but he has been more on the metal side of the fence. Broderick is interesting cause I don't like his electric playing but the guy is a university taught classical guitarist and his interpretation of Lagnani always makes me happy. Just saying that this stuff isn't really exclusive to the metalhead crowd, especially Govan and Lane.

As for acoustic playing, have you seen Andy Mckee? That guy is also pretty intense and funny enough he cites his favourite guitarist as John Petrucci, guess he transcends the metal head category occasionally too...

Kind of missed my point of the post. I was showing a simple piece of percussive acoustic that tickles my fancy, I am not trying to compare it to anyone or even suggest that it's from one of the best Acoustic Players out there. I know Andy Mckee, Don Ross, Justin King etc

I did mention that this is the direction I am trying to go in with my acoustic playing. I am getting there hoepfully ?

My mentioning of Petrucci, Broderick, Govan, and Lane was to highlight how I have read on GFSA how these players inspire with their playing etc, and it's generally from the Metal side of the fence where these comments come from ?

What I was trying to say basically is that percussive acoustic(or Electric) playing is what does it for me(at this point in time) ?

Your Squonkness, if this is what floats your boat you should check out Antonio Forcione, and in fact you should have gone to see him when he was here last year.

Anyhoots, the problem I have with many of these guys with the radical chops is that they don't have great composing skills. The composition seems to be there to show off the flash playing rather than being satisfying in it's own right.

This, Your Squonkness, is where you come in, because your compositions are interesting and satisfying and they have a bit of something unique that comes from you and your experiences.

My bad ? Look for a guy named Stuart Ryan, he has some instructionals on youtube for acoustic percussive playing. There's a guy named Dale Campbell who's got lessons up on the style as well ?

Take a look at Kaki King pieces like Carmine Street and Night After Sidewalk - it's pretty simple stuff and it sounds nice, just a good place to look for things to practice ?

It's cause the metalheads are the only people open minded enough to find players like them ? It's amazing what you can accomplish with an internet connection when the Bob Dylan records are put down ?

Seriously though it's a real shame that there's pretty much no fusion scene in S.A...

Interestingly enough, Michael Hedges (the originator of the style if you ignore the Flamenco players) often used to refer to himself as an "acoustic heavy metal guitarist". ?

Just as a side note, DADGAD is a really cool tuning to use when messing with this stuff, however there is another one I'd like to recommend which is CGDGAD. Kaki King has used this tuning on a few occasions, was learning Carmine Street and just really got along with jamming in this...

I have a DADGAD piece that has a slight narrative to it, and because of the Celtic feel, I decided to dedicate it to the Cornish Pasty(From Padstow to Polperro). You have to go to Cornwall to actually understand this ?

Will try CGDGAD as well.

I think if your whole repertoire only consisted of this style it would be pretty boring. I would chuck in one number just to keep the audience awake or even interested!

and here i speak only for myself.... but this tapping style of acoustic playing is mind blowing ....FOR ONE SONG . i ran out bought imported cd's and downloaded every video i could when i saw justin king for the 1st time....... but they all sound the same .meaning the next song has the same tapping maybe just in another key ... i think my observation somewhat ties in with what Bob said re the "acoustic tappers" doing the technique well but lack in the composition side ........ it's a style i love and admire but i get bored of very quickly .and listen to these mind blowing players in very small doses if i want to enjoy it

This is why I enjoy Andy Mckee and Kaki King, may not be as much flash as much of the time but definitly a lot more solid from a compositional perspective ? Michael Hedges was also an incredible song writer but all that naff pop music he made really has just put me off him ?
