Fresh on the announcement that there are two species of Clouded Leopards that diverged 1,000,000 years ago (which aren't really Leopards, BTW, but a seperate, similar looking cat), they've discovered that the Iranian Cheetah - last remnant of the Asiatic Cheetahs, are a sub-species that diverged from African Cheetahs 30,000 years ago: http://news.bbc.co.uk/earth/hi/earth_news/newsid_9365000/9365567.stm But the puir wee darlin's are far from safe - with overhunting of their prey and overgrazing threatening their future. Ain't genetics amazing? They let us read the history of life like a map (albeit a map that's upside down and has labels in hieroglyphics, but we're getting there ? ) *edit* - realised when looking at the original article that the two Clouded Leopards diverged 1, not 2, million years ago.

And that sir, is a problem for me. People chipping in "because it's going to be deleted anyway" only serves to make the thread spiral further out of control before I can get to it and makes it more of a nightmare to sort out when I do.

BTW - my deletions were a lot more wide-ranging this time (like the Cheetah apparently ?). If it had something I objected to or quoted another post that was deleted, it is gone...

My suspicion was that he was a CIA dude but he did know a lot about the (very few) birds in the area so who knows. Apparently the mountains were heavily forested until a scroched earth policy by some or other conquerer a few centuries ago...
