So while on leave in December, I finally tracked down the PRS SE Santana that I was searching for, and after going all the way to Pretoria (from Jhb), the dude fails to tell me that the guitar had a huge chip out of the headstock,, >☹ but apart from the chip, the guitar was perfect in every respect, great neck, nice sound and overall exactly what I was looking for. So after some arm-wrestling, I negotiated the price down and decided I'll take it.
Below are some pics of the headstock with the machineheads removed
At first I thought I'd repair the chip by using Dan Erlewine's "superglue dropfill method" but after a couple of days I realised this was not working as the glue never set rockhard (due to the size of the chip), so had to remove the glue and decided instead to use epoxy.
I was happy with the result and then proceeded to shape the headstock as close as possible to what it should look like, using 2000 grade wet/dry sandpaper.
After a couple of sessions of spraying/buffing and finishing off with a clear coat, here is the final result
lessons learned :- use superglue to dropfill small chips and stock up on a healthy dose of patience as this is a repair you dont want to rush. ?
