Im looking to buy a high gain distortion pedal. I need a "smooth" distortion thats not not "chunky". The boss MZ-2 sound is just a bit harshe. What about a tonebone trimode ? I used to own a tonebone hot brittish but it was part of the deal to get my orange amp.
Ever tried the Tech21 GT2? I use one and I love it! WHat kind of tone do you want though?
Liquid Laney? Mesa high gain? The Eh Metal muff is good as well!
I like tonal variety. I really like mesa high gain sounds. I think ill have to buy about 3 pedals to suit my needs. I like the sound on that pedal you posted, will have a try out at the shops soon. The main options at this stage are :
1. Tonebone Plexitube
2. Tonebone Trimode
3. Sans amp GT2
Will investigate more.
I've heard a lot about the tonebone pedals... I'll go check them out. Have you played on one yet?
Francis has (had?) a Tonebone. Hot brittish or something. Very nice sounding! Worth the outlay, I reckon.
I used to have a tonebone hot brittish. Awesome pedal ( 12Ax7 tube driven ). You get a very warm sound and its really awesome. I had to trade it for my orange head. This time ill get a Plexitube or trimode simply because it has 2 channels to it, Rhythm and lead ( Basicly 2 seperate EQ's ) and that should be awesome. They are quite expensive. THe hot british goes for about R1400 and the plexi/trimode is about R2800 so i will have to wait.
You should checkout the gear reviews on gearwire.com. They've done a lot of stompbox reviews. Otherwise, your best bet is to go test the pedals at your local music shop.
gearwired reviews are really crap. The guy that plays cant play guitar at all and he like talks 5 mins of nonsense about the packaging and stickers and crap. Then also he sets up the pedals in a way that they sound crap. Ill rather test them at my local stores 🙂
I guess you have to trust your own ear. And yes, I do agree the way he sets up the pedals is very basic and the info he gives is more for amateurs who have never used them before.
Yeah i dunno, he uses a rickenbacker guitar for all reviews even stuff like the metal muff, and obviously it will sound crap. The other is that he does not play good guitar, and the pedal isn't justified then. All of them sound bad, and im sure they actually rock when tried live 🙂
I was completely turned off the DS-1 and SD-1 after watching the gearwire reviews. I've settled on an old SD-2, an MT-2 and a Turbo tubscreamer. I guess I should have tried them myself. The problem is that I'm not really into Stevie Vai and Satriani and the guys I like use really expensive boutique pedals like the ZVEX stuff and the Pro-Analog Duel drive. I'm already deep enough in debt.
Have you tried the Boss MD-2. My buddy uses one and it sounds pretty good.
Regarding the SD1, i think those are great pedals for what you pay, my buddy got one for R300 and it gives a great overdriven sound with his tele. Its def not a high gain pedal tho...
Yeah, im not a big boss distortion pedal fan. I like things like the tonebone, mi-audio pedals etc etc. They are a bit more expensive tho
