Hi all,
I posted this in the contacts area, but there may be a better place. If so, please just tell me and I will move it.
I recently read Alan's story about starting out on acoustical vs. electric and it rang a very loud bell. I have been through exactly the same story, only in reverse. I was the well meaning but misguided parent...
My son wanted to play guitar, more particularly, he wanted to be a bad-ass, heavy-metal rock-god. So I bought him a cheap acoustic guitar and made him take lessons at the primary school. This was exactly what he didn't want. So he saved up and bought an electric guitar. Also a cheap one, he was in grade 7 in primary school, after all. The only problem is an electric guitar by itself doesn't play very well...
As the ever supportive parent I bought him a second hand Marshall 50watt amp. It was there in the shop and the price was right and I didn't know any better.
But then when we plugged the guitar into the amp it still didn't make the rock sounds that he wanted, or I just don't know how to make those sounds on guitar, or something. And there I ran out of things I could help him with.
So I am looking for someone to give back a little of the enthusiasm that he has now lost by being stuck with (maybe) the wrong guitar, (probably) the wrong amp and (definitely) the wrong dad. Someone who would spend an evening with him making music, talking about guitars, advising me on upgrades, lessons, whatever. Ideally this would be someone who would accept payment in pizzas and beer...
I am not really looking for formal lessons at this point, although I am open to advice. If the consensus is that we will only get this sort of encouragement in a formal class environment I suppose we will look at that then.
Anyway, so if anyone would be prepared to share some enthusiasm with us I would appreciate it!
Thanks,
Sander

Sounds like the boy needs some FX!
I bought my first guitar just over a week ago, and while I got an amp thrown in, the range of sound and tonality that the combination makes is very limited. What's needed are effects modules (usually in the form of pedals) to vary the sound and make it sound like whatever, clucking chickens if you want.
I'm not an expert by ANY definition of the word - but you'll defnitely find the help you need on here.
Hey, you might just get hooked yourself. Fancy jamming with the lad?
My youngest went to Std6 this year, and I'm patiently waiting for him to get bitten by the bug, as I have.

Thanks Claudio, I will talk to you offline.
ToneDef, the bug has bitten, but I suffer from a very bad case of too many interests, and music is one of my lower priorities. Also my musical abilities isn't nearly as strong as his, so even though it is a cliche, I really think I am too old to start now. More and more my focus is moving towards seeing his skills grow, rather than mine.
Enjoy your bug! ?
