Thanks for that - I haven't seen video footage of Django before.
Listening to him you wouldn't say the guy had only two fingers that worked. But seeing how he did it is wonderful...

I've seen this before. But it's wonderful every time. Just magnificent.
Interesting how he does a lot of bending which doesn't seem very popular in recent jazz guitar.

Phew, good stuff that.

some useless info on django for those that don't know...........he had his fingers burnt in a fire that when they healed the tendoms in his ring finger and pinkie had shrunk and didn't work as it used to .... he was already an acknowledged guitarist at the time..... and the fire was his fault he bumped over a candle coming home to his gypsy trailor where his wife was working with flamable liquid and they both barely escaped with their lives....... it was however this accident that really made him famous cos up to then he was playing typical gypsy music it was only after the accident that he was inspired by louis armstrong and got into jazz..... and oddly enought his gypsy music fans disowned him for playng jazz .and not traditional gypsy music . but he evenually did find a way to use his damaged fingers to chord on the top two strings ....... and then all the solo lines come from the index and middle finger ...... BUT the chords still used the other fingers when they could ...... amazing true life encounter on how perserverance and determination can overcome most difficulties......
he had a short life died in 1953 if i recall at 40 something . interesting note that his son( who was NOT taught by him, cos the story goes d'jango wanted him to be a pianist so he learnt from other family members ) and grandson have carried on the tradition and both are respected jazz guitar players......
respect in the truest sense to this great man

Also never seen footage, just amazing. How's that crazy alternate picked bit?
There was a great piece in Guitar Techniques a couple months back on his playing, with a number of small studies in his style. I still haven't plucked up the courage to attempt them, and I have a fully functional left hand. ?

I love the way that Django doesn't turn it on all the time and just because he can. He's paying a lot of respect to the tune in that solo.
Great rhythm playing, and the parts that Django plays somewhere between the rhythm guitars and Grapelli's violin are very clever.
The rhythm section is very solid. I love that old jazz rhythm style of playing.

Second time I have seen this. Love it, actually turned me onto him.
