Squonk Hi Do some solos freak you out, no matter how easy or hard they are to play. Jimmy Page's solo in "Stairway to Heaven" from "the song remains the same", still gives me goosebumps today. It's more of a soul, feeling thing than a technical thing. Gilmours solo in "Shine on you crazy Diamond" also freaks my aural senses. Even a basic lick like Clapton's "Wonderful Tonight", I can never get enough of it. What turns you on?
NorioDS Metallica's Nothing Else Matters! And Slash on GnR's Paradise City. Great topic, by the way ?
Renesongs Gilmours solo in "Shine on you crazy Diamond" also freaks my aural senses. Watching him doing it live at Albert Hall "Remember that night" is orgasmic even if it is only the DVD
Vintage-Vibe Whether on "American Stars N Bars" or live, Neil Young's "Like a Hurricane" takes me off to another place EVERY TIME ! Sheer raw melody & power ! The Byrd's "Eight Miles High" (The entire song in fact) is a sonic masterpiece too. Nirvana's "Make You (Un)happy" (AKA "Sappy") always inspired me too, with the winding up and down the extremes of the fretboard. Eric Clapton live on Hyde Park doing solo for "Old Love" is jaw-dropping. Brian May on "Bohemian" and "We Are The Champions" are 2 pieces of melodically constructed GENIUS ! Whew ! Can't think anymore after gym ! ? VV

I'm NOT Clapton's biggest fan but I LOVE "Old Love" and all of his acoustic stuff from his MTV Unplugged set. He won a grammy or something for that and he tuned he thought it was too unpolished and raw ? When will we realise that sometimes, that's exactly what works best? Brian May on "Bohemian" and "We Are The Champions" are 2 pieces of melodically constructed GENIUS! Love Brian May. Can not fault any solo! Love the intro to Masters of the Universe.

The more is less approach. No speed, but awesome tones and knowing exactly what notes to play to complement the song, not just display technical prowess. In my experience 80% of Joe Public think Neil Young is a folk singer, and do not know his incredible guitar work and hard rock stuff. He wouldn't be hailed "Godfather of Grunge" by Vedder, et al if he only played harmonica and Heart of Gold! ;) Long live The Horse ... Spyke On the Brian May topic - Who wants to live forever. Not so much a masterpiece but combined with Freddie's vocals it forms a powerful presence. Classic solo's for me have to be Nothing Else Matters - Metallica, Smells Like Teen Spirit - Nirvana and Seether's remake of Fine Again; amongst others.
Manfred-Klose Oh yeah, what about Chuck berry - Johhny B Good, That riff inspired me and many other people i know.
Explorerlover Wow..a couple of 'em really Shine on you Crazy Diamond pt 1-5 - Dave Gilmour Comfortably Numb - Dave Gilmour [ especially the 2nd "mean" solo ] Outlaw Torn - Kirk Hammett Unforgiven - Kirk Hammett Something - George Harrison ....I'm pretty sure there's a lot more than these somewhere in the filing cabinet of my mind
