On a similar note, it's a depressing tendency for some 'artists' to cling to the reverse notion that if they don't sell much of their work, or they aren't ludicrously popular, it means they're quality. Or something similar.
Is it the artists or the fans?
There is a certain snobbery amongst fans sometimes, that THEY know the truth and the great unwashed do not. I've sometimes wondered if this holds back the object of their affections, or means that if said object suddenly got a bit further up the charts the "fans" would pronounce that he was never any good and look for some other obscurity to gratify themselves with.
I definitely believe there are some artists who don't want the big hits, or don't want the trappings that come with commercial success - not being able to go to the pub or the post office, the hangers on, the celebrity.
