Jeremy, if you pull this off and the guitars are a success and look and play great, imagine the commercial possibilities if you change the design slightly from a typical Gibson and come up with a similar high quality set neck guitar with your own distinctive styling.

But I'm probably putting the cart in front of the horse at this point! ?

I asked my paint supplier if they could mix colour along the cyan-magenta-yellow-black system a while ago and was told that the system is only used in the printing industry. I then thought that I'd get clever and ask about the Pantone Colour system, but was told the same thing, which is a pity. It'd be handy if someone develop the system in the paint industry.

So what system is used in the paint industry then? If I remember correctly from kindergarten, when dealing with paint, the primary colours are Red, YELLOW and Blue as opposed to Red, GREEN and Blue. If the system used for mixing paint is as simple as mixing various amounts of Red, Yellow and Blue, surely there must a way to convert an RGB value to an RYB value. I know it's a fairly straight forward bit of math to convert between RGB and CMYK.

Yep that is correct. Red, yellow and blue to get your colour and black and white to set your hue. Obviously things get a little more complicated with more specialised coatings such as metallics and pearls, but that is the basic principal.

I have no knowledge of commercially available software that works along those lines. I use Corel Draw to give my customers a pre-visualisation of what their guitar would look like. Now if they supported a paint system then it would be awesome, but until they do I have to go to a photographic outlet and have a print made to take along to my supplier as a mixing guide. Inkjet and laser printers simply don't offer an exact match as far as colour is concerned, regardless of what sort of paper you use. Like I say it would be dead handy if someone developed software along those lines...

Do you know anything about how your supplier mixes colours? I'd expect it's more than just a haphazard approach of starting with a white paint and adding bits of red, yellow and blue until they reach the correct colour. If that was that simple though I am convinced that I'd be able to write a little app which could convert between the RGB and RYB colour space.

I will go to my local chemspec dealership which has an old guy in the back that might be able to enligthen me on how they mix there wood stains as he has mixed up a few samples before for me so maybe he will know..

Even if I am not able to do anything useful with the information, I would still find it very interesting to know.

Note that dyes (used in stains) and pigments (used in paints) are quite different in the way they affect colour. Dyes filter the light going through them, pigments absorb all but the colours they bounce back.

Hi NG, have a look for a RAL Colour Chart. This is used specifically in the powder coating industry. It may be of some use to you.

Well i finally had a hour this afternoon that was without work, so got to do the neck and pup routes and all the holes for the controls and switch.

Will take a picture tomorrow of the one that i have the bridge and tail piece for.

I am hoping to start on the necks tomorrow as well, let hope i get time...

My apologies, i meant this is a great thread and it takes yr time to post pics and detail what you have done ...there is an ability to thank you on the left,part of your profile and i saw that no one had so i immidiately fixed that, cos this is a great thread.
