Tuning in 5ths?

I'm a cellist, who's used to strings tuned in 5ths. I'm dying to learn bass though but tuning in 4ths just blows my brain/left-hand abilities, and renders me a complete beginner, which is somewhat annoying. So here's the question: do y'all think a normal 4 string bass re-tuned to C - G - D - A would work? (So the bottom two strings would be lower, the D would be the same and the top string would be tuned up by a tone...) I'm sure it can be done, but the question is would it still sound good/like a real bass, or would the lower strings be too slack etc? Your thoughts/experience/opinions s'il vous plait! ?

Cool. There's even less of a 'metal' bass than there is a 'metal' guitar, it's mostly labels for marketing purposes imo.

My friend who plays bass is also a former cellist - he also plays guitar so doesn't really have a problem with the tuning. Why didn't you consider a fretless?

I did, but they're pretty uncommon 2nd hand, and quite a bit more pricey new so fretted seemed easier to get my paws on...
