Offer to repair for free - making it clear that you are a learner. And be honest about it - to yourself if to no one else - if somebody offers you a job that you know is beyond you, or if you start the job and realise you're in over your head then tell the owner he needs to take it somewhere else.
Alternatively speak to the active good repair guys and see if they are willing to take on an apprentice. You never know.
