So how good do you reckon you are?

Trying to get a feel for how experienced guys are (or honestly consider themselves to be). If you can give an indication of how long you've been playing as well, would be awesome. (I need something to shoot for, see?) (old forum) Poll Results: Honestly? Eh? Where do you open the gas valve on this thing?: 2 Easy does it. Baby steps!: 4 I suck harder than Divine Brown: 1 I don't suck as hard as I used to.: 8 I can help myself. Sorta.: 7 Hey, I'm getting better!: 14 Yeah... that hard work is paying off.: 4 This is more like it!: 9 I'm better than I ever thought I would be!: 0 I have a guitar and trust me, I know how to use it, baby!: 15 I'm pretty damned good if I may say so myself!: 3 <R. Hammond> I AM A GUITAR PLAYING GOD! </R. Hammond>: 0 I am the alpha and the omega.: 1 Tremble in fear, mortal!: 2

I think thats where the 'cello ninja' part comes into play. ?

BMU

Cello ninja or no, you're talking about a 34" scale bass guitar vs a 27" cello...good point. Thats gonna take some stretching. (At least that's what I gather from Wikipedia - ±27"?)

Intonation - good point too.

Edit: I actually thought this was the 'tuning in fifths' thread, sorry.

I still take lessons twice a week at school.

Where do you live? Do you have your other band members lined up?

See Broderick is playing Jackson now?
I saw :'( But alas I need to get a jackson myself?
I stay in jhb at the moment. Still looking for members got a guitarist now.

I was in a band for a year but it fell apart when my drummer got addicted to starcraft 2 :-\
Man, I love SCII.

I find my time quite divided between scII and guitar atm, Damn you blizzard...

It's the multiplayer that got me hooked, doh!

Games suck your life away...i was addicted to dota which killed my guitar playing time, luckily going away for vac work and being internetless has purged me of this sickness, i'll probably play still when i get home, but only a few games for fun rather than serious dota... My guitar playing has improved so much so quickly now that i am actually practising properly ?

I've given up trying to be an awesome player, or classifying myself as awesome.

I mean, if being a good player meant anything then Vai, Satriani and Malmsteen would've been in bands. But they are "one man shows".
The fact that anyone is a good player doesnt mean they have good songwriting ability, or that they can play and contribute to a band.

Some of history's most awesome and famous songs are very basic...look at songs like Enter Sandman, Paranoid, Smoke on the Water....Awesome songs, but quite basic.

You can also only listen to that masturbation guitar playing (like Dragonforce) for so long before it's completely boring.

I didn't touch a guitar for perhaps five years while I worked my way through every FPS & RPG I could lay my hands on. No regrets.

FIFY ?

For medical reasons I've been forced to stop playing for a while. It's almost a relief to have more free time...but every lost month means more catching up. Sigh. ☹ I almost always end up regretting such breaks.

RobK

I chose "Tremble in fear, mortal". I'm assuming it's meant to be for those who are good, but I'm special, so I used it as a decription of my non-awesomeness :roflmao:

??

Ah. Pinched nerve in my neck. Apart from silly amounts of pain, it's meant a lack of strength (for months I couldn't even pick up the milk container in my fridge) and coordination in my left arm/hand.

Tonedef

Caused by guitar playing? (Or peeking over the wall at the chick next door getting dressed) ?

[deleted]

I have no idea. :'(

Get thee to thy physiotherapist, post haste!

My workdays have been dragging along like crazy since I got my axe, all I want to do is get home and practice!

A good question..."The hard work is beginning to pay off =D" - but I'd qualify that my role models in playing/learning are James Kibby on guitar and Spencer Mbadu on bass (teachers at JazzWorkShop, Cape Town). Multi-talented and many decades of experience - I want to play & develop for at least as long as they have! So I may never change that statement...

Various guitars in hands 18yrs - really only concentrated on developing playing/songwriting for 5yrs (inc. 3 yrs lessons @ jazzworkshop).

If I concentrated on one instrument (elec guitar, nylon string/steel string acoustics or bass) - I'm sure would have developed in one style/genre but yeah - I enjoy making music, and playing - at times - is an essential meditation!
