I've been trawling through the "Pre-setup guitar shops" thread, and felt I needed to ask some more questions.
I took the time last night to do some basic fiddling, and there are a couple of things I noticed/corrected.
Firstly, low E was buzzing like mad even with a gentle attack. This was easy to sort. What was more noticible was that the guitar's action was all over the place. D, ferinstance, was snagging the landing gear of low-flying aircraft.
I adjusted all the strings to an equal action, and this made the world of difference to picking and fretting more accurately. This made me wonder, though - do some players set unequal action across the strings as a preference and if so, how come?
The adjustable thingies on the bridge (no idea what they're called) can also be adjusted back and forth, and this was also all over the place. I let this be, as it didn't seem to cause any hassles (and there's nothing more unsightly than a "used" screw ?). My question is, what is this adjustment for? (considering the tuners do the same job, no?)
I definitely need to get this thing given a proper once-over by someone who knows what they're doing, but knowing why he/she would tweak this or that is obviously crucial basic knowledge to have.
Thanks!
