Hi guys
My band has been recording some stuff this holiday, but we ended up not even tracking guitars cause there was just too much hum and interference that we couldn't figure out. One or 2 days it was fine, others it just got really bad. I have a line 6 spidervalve mk1 with new JJ tubes and the strymon pre, and the other guitarist has the same, minus the addons. Ruled out my guitar, cables and amp fault by testing his against mine etc. So I think it's a power thing? Or maybe some sort of grounding issue? Tried switching between ground and lift, tried different cables, everything. The hum goes partially away when I touch the bridge. Can anyone recommend a solution. Been looking at Power Conditioners (Furman?)? I'm guessing it's a UPS for amps. No idea where to find one or what to do, but I need this fixed so I can record guitars.
Help?
Cheers.

Try using a Boss NS2

If it's not ground loops, then it's dirty power (caused by any number of things from dimmers to fridges), and a power conditioner will sort that out.
Noise gates or suppressors can help, but it's never as good a result as avoiding noise at the source.

Thanks for the replies guys. Don't think the NS2 will do the trick really. Gonna have to get a power conditioner. Any recommendations. Do you get specific ones for guitar amps?

Maybe try running an extension cable from a different power source first if possible to make sure that dirty power is the cause before you fork out for a conditioner.

Are you using the amp's line out into your recording setup or mic'ing the amp?

We're micing the amp. Well, I've decided on a power conditioner. Marshall has the Samson p10 or something, but it's rackmount. I need something I can put on my pedalboard rather. Any ideas?
Cheers.

A Boss ns-2 wont work it would just kill your tone.
Get a power conditioner.
Do you run one of those old school CRT monitors ?
What type of genre are you recording, is it metal or melow stuff ?
can you please explain the way you record, is it with a mixer or a usb sound card ?

What's wrong with rack mount? You do not need the clean power at your feet unless you stand on your amp, so don't go and put it in a pedalboard.
