  • Playing for 30 years and still learning

No, I'm not that experienced. Call it one year thirty times. I play acoustic fingerstyle. Mostly 70's stuff - Blackbird, True Colours, Layla, Alice's Restaurant, Angie. Like that. I play regularly with a mate that I taught yo back. And of course jam with friends at get-togethers. Used to play at TJ's folk club, and am now looking for another scene. I once tried out for a band, but didn't make the grade - back to the fretboard. Ah well.

I enjoy the posts and am gently looking for someone to jam with.
    Hi Terry

Join the club, have also been playing for awhile, but not seriously untill I discovered GFSA and some good mates that have inspired me.
I am hoping to become a fingerstyle guitarist, just recently thrown away the plectrum but still a long way to go.

    Where are you based? Guitars?

Strange enough I played my first ever gig at TJ's last year at the young age of 46 ?

    Welcome
I just figured out that 2011 will be 30 years for me too. But the difference between me and thee is that I know it all! And I can sum it up in one sentence... Each time I learn something new, I learn there are at least 50 things I don't know.

I can easily echo your sentiment - one year 30 times. Some years, worse than others, other years have actually set me back, and the odd year doesn't even count - I'm not sure I've even picked up my guitar with any serious intent.

It'd be interesting to know a bit more about you - where you are, when you're looking to jam, etc.

      Good luck
      dh
Hey Terry, Welcome to GFSA, you are not alone in that situation, I am another, but I did all sorts of other things in between....... ?

Yep, tell us more about yourself, where you from, what guitars you have, etc, etc etc.........

          Howzit and Welcome....... ? ?
Alice's Restaurant? Very tough. Playing that cycle for 17.5 minutes. My left hand used to take such strain.
When did you last play at TJ's?
Thanks all for the welcomes. Makes me feel not so isolated. Some people asked more about me: I asked my folks for a guitar when I was 13, and got one. I imagine they thought that this wouldn't last long - but it did. They also gave me a book called "Play guitar in 30 minutes" and lo' I did - One finger chords G7 and C not playing the base notes give you "Molly Malone". My first song.

Someone asked about Alice's Restaurant - The fingerpicking is pretty straightforward. The hard part was learning the four A4 pages of text! I've forgotten most of it now.

I last played at TJ's when they were in Randburg - they had a good model then - just bring your guitar and you got a set of three songs. That was lekker. I've been to their latest venue at Mark's Park, but it seems to me that it's become something of an old-boys club. You have to book a date well in advance. So I don't play there anymore.

I'm going to try Andy McGibbon's at Old Parktonians this Wednesday. Will let you know.

I don't know if all the other old hands feel this way, but it seems to me that unless I have something to work towards I don't practice much. So a folk-club gig is ideal. I'm going to open a thread under collaborations to see if we can't discuss a folk-club type thing.

At the moment I'm working on Jonny Clegg's "The Crossing" which isn't fingerstyle, but is a serious anthem song.

                I absolutely love that song.
