@Vernon...howzit mate ? Welcome to the Forum....a great place to dial in to.
I stood in on occassion for Jimmy on vocals with The Idiots (Spur night club in Cape Town in late 60's..was just a kid at the time). I have not seen or heard of Reggie (Bass), Jock (guitar) or Peter (hammond organ) for many years. During that time Mike Amann (drums) was replaced with Keith Hall (later drummer for Picketty Witch, UK ..."Same old feeling").
I know the boys got together recently and won a "Battle of the Bands" in Cape Town. ?
Unfortunately I do not know the whereabouts of Louis
Well, keep us informed from down under !
I actually spoke to Louis sister Lola a few hours ago...he's alive and kicking and lives in Cape Town.. I also spoke to Reggie today. he's still playing.. Mike plays in a band with Patrick Brotherton from the Alpha Set
That's fantastic Bambi...! and welcome to the Forum...Good to hear the guys are still with us... Reggie is a great player and a great guy as well...Mike had an excellent voice too. I remember he did "Hello Suzie" (Amen Corner) so well ?
? "Half as nice" always reminds me of Mike .. another Amen Corner... Louis' sister Lola is also a musician.. she's in the band with Mike & Patrick

Wow, what a small world ........ I used to go listen to Omega LTD. Louis was/is an awesome guitarist .......
BTW. Saverio Grande (Savvy), toured with us (The Strangers) for one tour after the break-up of SUCK. Yep, an awesome, very very "enthusiastic" (don't ask me to explain that, he will know.....hahahaha) drummer. And he was an amazing character at the time ...... if you ever see him, ask him about Clive Calder!!! I believe he lives in CT.
Edit. Just spoke to the guy who was friends with Louis, (and his brother) and apparently he did come down from the mountain to do a "re-union" thing with Omega Ltd. some time ago. Glad to hear he has recovered.......

Bassmanwa - would that be you - Vernon Moore lead axe player of the 60's with Peter Wood, Dopey Reimers and yours truly deebee - ring a bell - David Butler, on bass. I don't believe it. Three weeks ago i met Graham Watling with Cliffie O'Leary, i played bass with him as well at one time. I hadn't seen Graham in a thousand years, and then he told me that he moved up to Joeys with you, and stayed for 30 years. I asked about you and he said that you had moved to Aussie, and now here you are - good grief is all that i can say. As for Louie, he is well and i saw him recently at the monthly Killarney jol, he doesn't even own a guitar any more, but he jammed brilliantly on Richard Blacks' axe, and without warning he ripped into the Chaikovsky number, and brought the house down. It was brilliant. By the by, what made you change to bass after all those years on lead. There is a book that i wrote, it comes up with my signature, and in there is the first gig that we did in Plumstead, when Erroll East was drumming for us, and when he passed clean out in full swing at a cymbol. What a gig - what a night. Remember how we got paid, no buckeroonies, but as much booze as we could drink. Good days. It's fantastic to hear from you, and to know that you are alive and well ''down under''. deebee [very original hey].

Louie Greef, Jimmy Retief, The Spurs Nightclub, The Idiots, Omega Limited, Dopey Reimers, Reggie Edward, Savvy Grande, Jock Decoiter, Richard Black, Errol East. These are all names I know well through my sister (who is about 9 years older than me) I don't think I ever met any of these legends except Jimmy Retief who in 1967/8 was sitting in our living room and was the the first man I had seen in person with long hair curling down to to his midriff. Errol East I must have seen a few times because I believe he was my sisters boyfriend for a while. I heard omega limited via a seven single of Louie Greef doing Tchaikovsky I on guitar. It would be great to get in touch with some of these heroes I have heard spoken of all these decades. Hell it would be even better to jam with them.

Hi David found out how to do a reply, wow author yes tried to find Peter after all these years, think he might have gone back UK, so funny when I read about Louis thought maybe he had gone as Jeff Pritchard who also moved up to Joburg from Cape Town and looking at the posting by renesongs played with Jeff and Hennie De Klerk on bass, Peter Sweetman on drums. I remeber we did a gig somewhere in a hall in the burbs with the Lost Souls - what a name - and we wanted to let Jimmy get up and sing and Peter and the manager guy can't remember his name, they shared a flat together in Moulle Point did not want him to sing.
Hey look must get a copy of your book, are you still playing, yes talking of Graham a great guy met him again when I was visiting in 1981 remeber we went to Joburg together the first time with the Hammond on top of the roof of an old Ford Cortina everybody glared at us wherever we stopped as we long hair and Oudtshoorn everybody.
Will send a long e-mail as I am writing from work - yep 65 and still working at a JOB but it pays bloody well, am currently rehearsing with a covers band 2 guitars, drums, female vox and myself on bass.
Fantastic to hear from you and to Renesongs who was your sister, those name Spurs, Colony with Ronnie Singeralso Charlie used to play with Dopey at the Navigators Den and Errol East.
Have to go now 2.44pm Perth Time
Hey you have made my day and will make sure I stay in touch
Cheers DeBeers

Hi I remember as a kid listening to Louis at the Skyline in Hillbrow in about 1970. Later 1972 I was playing in a group called Snow at the Spur night club Cape Town during breaks I used to run around the block to a hotel to listen to Omega/Idiots . Befriended Reggie Abrams he and Louis used to come and jam with us during their breaks. Reggie was a great inspiration to us and encouraged us kids. I bet hes still encouraging youngsters in a music shop somewhere.

Reg is still very active in Cape Town, performing regularly in tribute shows - most recently in a great Fleetwood Mac show I saw last month.

spoke to Louis yesterday ..
I know a whole bunch of people in CT from the Spur and the Colony days who speak very highly of Louis and would like to hook up with him again - I respect the man's privacy so I wont ask for his contact details but If you would mention it to him next time you talk to him and see if he wants to see some old faces again.

I'm another old toppie from those days. I played with Savvy, Dave Gomersall, Mike Pregnolato in a band called Razzle. Louis lived next door to me for few months in Loader St. When I was a kiddie we used to go to the Battle of the Bands at the Alhambra Theatre every year. I remember Dopey Reimers, the girl I was with couldn't decide whether he had better hair than Jimmy Retief! Jock DeCoito told me how Jimmy would stick his finger up his ass and then rub it under the nose of anyone who made a mistake at practise.
Louis was simply worlds away from anyone else. I would love a contact address just to say hello and thank you. Can anyone help?

What a fabulous thread
I have a little book just published in SA which mentions some of these musicians. I have a line in there about Louis in the seventies when he was rocking Joburg night after night. I just googled his name, like I do occasionally, to see if he was around and this forum pops up. Very cool.
I was a laaitie back then, checked out the Battles at the Alhambra in the sixties then got into the action in the 70's, playing at the Hartleyvale and Green Point battles and later played with some of those mentioned here, Hedley, Harry, etc. I once even played a couple of times as drummer with the Sisters Five. In Durban I jammed with Steve Fataar and in Joburg with a young Trev Rabin (drop a few legendary names). Drummers get around. But those were ....strange days.
