My take on the SA National Anthem

I've just completed a track for a client which involved a slightly different version of the SA National Anthem.

The anthem is in 2 parts: One acoustic and the other a bit harder. Recorded in Sonar 8.5.3.

Nice. I've always had just one problem with our national anthem, and that is that's in two parts; two very separate, distinct parts. I like the way you've dealt with this head-on by treating each of the parts in two distinct musical styles. At the juncture, it feels like something is either slightly out of time, or that the tempo changes slightly - could be the player though. Hope your client likes it too.

I agree with you. In fact, that is the main reason I dislike our anthem (and not from a political perspective). I think Nkosi Sikelel' iAfrika is a beautiful song and I also think "Die Stem" is a beautiful song. Each, in the own right, wonderful pieces of music. But this bastard slap-together of two songs does neither justice and is certainly not worthy of a national anthem.

And even from a political point of view the anthem doesn't make sense to me. I think we'd have been far better off getting something brand new, something telling our story, and something that makes musical sense.

Domhatch, there really was no way I could have had a seamless join as the tempos are quite different. The final version will have a vocal on it as it is to be sung at an international boxing tournament. I will have to take my solo parts off. I originally put them there as a guide for the singer.

The timing that I used was done to make the singer feel comfortable.

You're taking time out to make the singer feel comfortable? That's like worrying about making sure the drummer has water! But I hear you. It wasn't a crit, just something I noticed - and I hear it every time I hear the anthem.
