Musica has some interesting and lesser known blues/rock under the rock section

Reinhard

Had a peek this morning and I was suprised about the amount of old school albums they have. Some of the best were:
1.Mike Bloomfield-Super session (incredible blues tone and playing)- A bargain for R130
2. The live adventures of Mike Bloomfield and Al Cooper
3. Joe Bonamassa
4. Derek Trucks
5. A load of Jeff Beck albums, even the classic "Blow by blow" album, one can't believe the variety of tones Jeff got out of his old Oxblood les paul.
6. A compilation of 3 albums by the Original Fleetwood Mac.
7. Rory Gallagher
8. Cream (not the limp Reunion show)
9. Badfinger

This was at musica in Canal Walk.

singemonkey

Huh. Interestin'. I've all but completely given up going into music stores because the selection is frequently so disappointing and the prices too high. I tend to use www.loot.co.za - which does free shipping over R200 - for books and music.

But obviously there are still odd bargains to be found in the "shops" ?

Steven Stills plays guitar on a good chunk of that. Not that that's a complaint - IMO Stills was one of the best players of the late 60s/early 70s.

2. The live adventures of Mike Bloomfield and Al Cooper
3. Joe Bonamassa

Bonamassa is "old school"?????

4. Derek Trucks

Hmmm.....

5. A load of Jeff Beck albums, even the classic "Blow by blow" album, one can't believe the variety of tones Jeff got out of his old Oxblood les paul.

He used several guitars on that album including a strat and a tele fitted with PAFs.

6. A compilation of 3 albums by the Original Fleetwood Mac.
7. Rory Gallagher

Now it's getting really interesting. Early Fleetwood did some great stuff, and Gallagher was a fab player.

I wouldn't say that Derek Trucks and Joe Bonamassa are old school at all...

Reinhard

Yes yes not old school I was just trying to remember all the albums I saw that interested me, but it was cool to find some material from the "young" guns too. Stuff like the Bloomfield and Bonamassa albums I had to import a few years back, good to see them on the shelves. Of all the stuff I saw Super Session and The Fleetwood mac albums are must haves.

You have to remember that perceptions change over time. Heck, GnR and Metallica are considered "old school" or "classic" by many these days, while for me they are still the "new kids"... ?

I would still say their style of music is old school. How often does one hear slide guitar being played like Derek does. Bonamassa has done everything from straight blues, to Zepp and ZZ TOP covers to acoustic blues. So definitely influenced by the old school, and definitely not mainstream.

Well yeah - they are both essentially blues players and it doesn't get anymore old school than the blues, but they definitely don't play in an old school fashion.
To me that fact that they are in the prime of their playing careers makes them non-old school.

singemonkey

I'm so freakin' old-school that I refuse to use the expression, "old-school."

Old-school rules ?

Anyway, thanks Reinhard for letting us know ...jrrr whether these guys are old-school or not ?

Bah! Nothing like the great white blues players of the 60s other than that he plays lots of pentatonic stuff. None of the soul of Green, none of the fire of 60s Clapton (Clapton doesn't have the fire of Clapton any more). Blues as a genre has completely lost the plot these days, it's almost parodic.

singemonkey

Hmm. I agree re: Bonamassa. He's all tone and technique with nothing moving coming out of it. But Derek Trucks is quite something, I think.

That "fire" you are referring to was heroin and alcohol....
He did get some fire back though after he came clean and I think he still has it.

Maybe. Might have been despite the heroin and alcohol. I'm not talking about sloppy playing or distasteful off-stage incidents - there was a real fire, a passion in his playing then that is not much in evidence these days.

One theory I have heard several times (but who knows really) is that Clapton only plays well enough to look the best in the company he's in. This is a problem when the band are hired hands and, if you subscribe to the theory, explains why he was so good with Cream and with the Dominos.

I'm not sure it explains his time with Mayall though, nor the moments on 461 Ocean Boulevard where he still sounded like he really meant it.

I don't have a hate on EC. There are a number of 60s greats that I wish would shut up now - and in some cases they don't even have a lack of money as an excuse.

Watching the Cream reunion, that was more like a dying ember than any kind of fire. He is an old blues muso, why doesn't he just stick to a 335 and a cranked valve amp. At least for the cream reunion, because comparing the reunion to the farewell is ☹. I swear he just sounds so much more fired up than on the strats, the highlight of his Hyde Park show is the two tracks on his cherry 335, it even looks like he enjoys it more.

I recently found proof that Clapton can get his God on post Cream:

Now this is from a while ago now. But it knocked my damn socks off. I just don't get why he doesn't do this all the time. He's capable of it.

AndrewD

The company he is in definitely plays a big role in how he performs.
Check out his autobiography - it was quite an eye opener for me.

That is the DVD I was talking about. He kills on a 335.

Wowzer! That's a bit more like it.

Reinhard

For some reason he gets this goofy grin when he straps on a archtop, you can see he is enjoying it
