IMO you need to head straight for his earlys 70s albums. The one held up as the classic is "Solid Air".

IMO he's at his best solo or with Danny Thompson involved. There was special chemistry there - Martyn and Danny.

L0L! The lack of bass fiddle players is definitely one of the signs of our collapsing civilisation.

Maybe Keira would come out of retirement to do a show with Bob. I'd pay to see that.

Well you get people who play those electric upright things, but it's not the same really. The double bass is a fine thing indeed.

There's a few players around Jo'burg. Half a dozen or so that I can think of - and that's without counting orchestral players. Not sure of availability though.

Part of what you hear here though is the fabulousness that is Danny Thompson, and there's nobody else that sounds like him.

I think that's partly because it's getting so hard to travel with the things. Danny T retired his first choice bass a couple of years ago because airlines were getting snotty about transporting basses. He got a set of dimensions that most airlines said they would accomodate and found a smaller "travel" instrument that fitted the bill, but now they don't want to carry that instrument anymore.

The double bass is not a small instrument.

I love double bass, there's nothing like it. I got to see Danny Thompson in action a few years ago and it's a memory I shall treasure for years. A truly great and totally unique player.
