Rockin' upright bass and some classic P90 Les Paul tone

Saw this browsing around for Jools Holland show performances:

I reckon Keira might like this one. And the guitar player shows what a Les Paul with P90s is supposed to sound like. It's almost just like Vic's new one.

yeah i know and love her stuff......... you know me too well........... but i do like her "new age" country for lack of a better phrase........ check out this funky tune........ kinda a mix between country and nu folk but oh so funky ........ and i love that she plays all live and keeps that live band sound ......... and mmmmmmmmmmmm yep don't tell my girlfriend i said this but "nothing is sexier than a woman playing upright bass"........ mind you i know she'd agree with that .......... ?

Love it :bopping: The P90 tone is awesome on the neck pup....looks like a '54 RI (with a wrap-around). Interesting vibrato he gets by moving the bridge with his hand...and the guitar stays in tune as well ?. The lady is super..wow !

Double bass is such a fab instrument. I prefer it to bass guitar anyday - that fab, sexy noise. You can do a lot with it too, though death metal might be a bridge too far. The trouble these days is travelling with the thing. Yes.... you can get those upright things which are a neck and a bridge and a couple of knobs, but it ain't the same sound at all.

Way cool instrument, and becoming more visible again. That's a good thing.

I really love this rockabilly sound in the video you posted. As far as I know, you can't do that with a bass guitar. George Harrison said that when they heard early Elvis tunes they thought they were playing the bass strings with drum-sticks. As Bob says, it's a amazing instrument for modern, electrified music. Pity so few bass fiddlers about.

And there goes my Les Paul Trainspotting cred. ? Didn't notice the wrap-around. Did notice the dark back looks fantastic on a gold-top under stage lights.

Everything I've heard says that intonation is really not a big issue on wrap-arounds. If I get another LP one day, it'll definitely have a wrap-around. Probably black with humbuckers :?

Looks like he's holding the body while he bends the neck with his left. I'd get very worried if I could move the TOM on a '54 RI. ?

Yep, looks like a neck bend to me. Dangerous stuff - wouldn't try it with my ES330 ?

I hate the very idea of neck bending. It seems so unnecessary and you could permanently damage your guitar into the bargain. When you have the options of finger vibrato, vibrato tailpieces, slide vibrato, string-benders, and probably others that are risk-free, it just seems nuts.

? the neck benders are most likely like mountaineers there are easier ways to summit but they do it the hard /risky way just cos they can .......

I bend the neck all the time. Doesn't take much pressure (especially on mahogany necks). Doesn't endanger a well made guitar - but then we are talking Gibson aren't we? (ducks and runs for cover)

Well, if I had to start up a band again, it'll have to be a lady on upright bass... ?
In fact I've been toying with the idea of a rock-a-billy band with upright bass for some time now

Yep. He's anchoring the body with the right hand and using the left to bend the neck.

I've seen it done before and it's always looked like a dangerous practice to me, but I don't recall seeing any of the practitioners break the neck or reading that they had.
