Several of the frontpersons mentioned here are actually more than useful guitar players - Joel, Ian Anderson, Sting, Jagger have all played guitar on records and on stage. I think that there's many a frontperson who CAN actually play an instrument at a good level but sees their job as selling the song to the audience. Bruce Springsteen and Joan Armatrading both get seen playing lots of rhythm guitar but are actually both very fine players. Ian Anderson is a classic example - concentrating on fronting the band but is a fine player of several instruments. Axl Rose plays decent piano. Who here has heard Cliff Richard playing guitar?

Ian Gillan {Deep Purple} - Bongos, tambourine and harmonica.
Tom Araya {Slayer} - Bass
Ronnie James Dio-RIP {Elf} - Bass
Even Ozzy and Rob Halford {Judas Priest} have been known to play harmonica.

In fact, very few lead singers/frontmen of Heavy metal/Hard rock outfits do play the guitar. IMO.

I went through a hectic Budgie period in the 70's

Must look them up again, they had some good riffs - Breadfan, In for the kill, Baby please don't go etc.

@ Squonk. Here's something interesting yet a little sad regarding Burke Shelley.
It's taken from the liner notes of Metallica's 'Garage Inc.' Album:

Not as amusing was the night Metallica met Burke Shelley in Cardiff on the Justice tour. He was employed at the venue as a stage hand."Then to add injury to insult," says Ulrich {Metallica's drummer}, "his fingers got caught in a roadcase on the loadout. I think he broke his thumb."
