1. Bon Jovi
2. AC/DC
3. U2
Good to see AC/DC is still pulling crowds. The 2 other bands have been here, no we just need DC to tour.

BON BON JOVI!!!!!!!!! jeeze I saw them the other day on same awful excuse for a how on MNET (an attempt to fill the programming with slightly edgier elevator music, with nice hair)--------------------- Weird how they are a more succesfull act...
There is a point where bands get to the place where they say "I have this lifestyle I must sustain, I dont want to loose it" so they decide to keep going long after there sell by date, In my view all of these bands are culprits.
Which is sad because, U2 were awsome in the day, Sunday Bloody sunday is great, as well as the entire Joshua tree album....
ACDC, were great because they showed the world what a SG could sound like played by a school boy with lots of marshalls
And Bon Jovi, well they didnt really give us much more than eye candy in all there video's thanks to their relentless groupies with big hair. On a side not over the years did anyone notice that Bon Jovi's groupie girls, have stayed in the same 18-30 category, while they themselves get older :-\ Talk about stuffing the ballot box...
On yet another side not, look at this faceless man the edge keeps hidden from the public
inflames
Bon Jovi? WHAT?
I seriously did not know they where the no 1 act in the world!
Don't get me wrong, they are a amazing band, but I do agree with Mika on some of the bands!

U2 would have to be in there .... they even sold out in RSA when other bands are cancelling some shows because of lack of interest.
The Beach Boys must have thought that if they would sell tickets anywhere it would be in Durban but they were wrong.
Shouldn't the Rolling Stones feature in the too?

Absolutely.........!!! One of the world's BEST (and best selling) Rock 'n Roll bands without a shadow of a doubt!!! And the oldest!!!! hahahahaha.....Sir Mick can certainly rock with the best of them....... ?
AC/DC I would definitely rate up there........

So it's based on ticket sales hey? Just goes to show that - A: sentiment sells. B: the biggest market is the more mature folks and C: If the missus wants to go watch Bon Jovi, the manguy has no say. ?

Did they tour this year? If not then they're not likely to make the list of top earners for the year.

Lady Gaga came in 4th. Metallica 5th.
The top 10 (which was on the Telegraph web site but seems to have vanished) was mostly older acts -presumably playing to an older audience with kids out of the house and a bit of spare cash. Michael Buble was also well up the rankings and although he's young from what I've seen his audience is not. Lady Gaga might be the only currently "happening" artist to be making major money from tours.
Some notes
1) The figures given are for GROSS, not for profit. Some of these acts might not be making that much after they've paid the record company, the sound company, the lawyers etc etc.
2) Ticket sales overall are down - especially in the USA where there are too many concerts at too high a price. AC/DC's and U2's figures seem to have not included any shows in the USA. Bon Jovi's shows in the USA accounted for just over half their ticket sales.
3) A more interesting figure might be to calculate revenues per concert. Bon Jovi played a lot more gigs than AC/DC and a lot less than Lady Gaga.
Dr X-Rated concludes that there are two sources of revenue here
1) A mature audience with some spare cash and a nostalgia itch to scratch
2) Developing countries that are enjoying the novelty of having massively famous people coming to play in their backyards (and have a currency that has strengthened against the dollar)

Busy reading Jon Bon Jovi - The Biography by Laura Jackson, Bon Jovi were the last band to play at Wembley stadium before it was demolished, to a capacity crowd of 72000. They recon the ratio of male/female is around 40/60. All talented musicians and artists in their own right. Seemed to achieve more no 1 hits in the UK than in the USA. Very hardworking, committed muso's doing b@ll busting gigs. IMO well deserving of the no.1 spot. Interesting that the top 3 are all 'older' bands,,,makes u think doesn't it? ?

Re MIKA's post: AC/DC are in the enviable position of never having stood for anything. All they have to do is rock, and they're doing everything their fans could hope for. Unpretentious yob-rock has its advantages. They don't have to be young (although they do have to be Young), they don't have to be original, and they don't have to be fashionable.
All they gotta do is rock.

the older bands can charge more an they do why? cos their fans are mostly older ppl with more disposable income hence higher ticket prices = higher gross takings...
stones not done a tour in the last couple of years but there are rumours an watch em go to top grossing tour of all time kinda thing...ditto kiss and 1 or 2 other bohemoths ... imagine a zep with young bonham on skins ..... sell out everywhere an then some as evidenced by the one off not so long ago...unlikely to happen.
point is ticket prices are super expensive for the bands trading on the sentimental ticket

If the missus says Bon Jovi it is, then Bon Jovi it is :roflmao:
I quite like Ritchie Sambora's playing, so I would "watch" the show - focusing on what he's doing

Rumour mill into overdrive now ... keith richards has been working on re releasing some older stones albums , the stones have not played together in more than 3 years but apparently charlie , ron and keef are going to muck about in a studio in the new year so mebbe just mebbe another stones tour is in the mix
Van Halen wil lbe touring in the american summer ,excpect a behemoth tour and expect to see em in the top 5 from a ticket sales POV for 2012

Please no! They were a great band. "Were". Past tense. They are long past the sell-by date and for some years now have given the impression that they no longer care how good or how bad their performance is. Which, of course, is partly our fault for refusing to acknowledge that the emperor hasn't got any clothes on.

Yeah. I fell for Uncut's hero worship of the stones when they said that the last LP was their comeback to form (shoulda noticed it sounded familiar). I've listened to it like 3 times. Overprocessed, under-inventive.
The Rolling Stones are not a great band. The Rolling Stones in 1975 are a great band. I'm definitely buying a ticket the moment I lay my hands on a time machine.

List the top 10. I'd be surprised if Ozzy wasn't there.

Top 5 has been listed already.
It depends on how you calculate the ranking - money or number of people in the audience. The Eagles will gross plenty because their ticket prices are very high. But not the HIGHEST. Oh no. That's Barbara Streisand who, it seems, can charge amounts that would give respectable credit cards a coronary.

AC/DC is and always be the best band in the world for me. Check out the Live at the River Plate dvd and you'll see. They still have the biggest selling album by a band of all time - Back in Black sold 48 million - only Thriller (110 million) sold more. Not a bad debut for Brian Johnson.Check out the list of all time biggest albums on Wikipedia for a few surprises...

But what sells you sugar? For me as far as songwriting goes, Mark Knopfler cant be far from the top. Or Dave Alvin or 10000000 others.
