I ~~beg to differ~~ don't think this is anywhere near reason #1. Unisolo riffs on two guitars is for starters why they are cool, and lyrics like 'jailbreak', 'southbound' and 'boys are back' really make my geese bump so2speak.

Lynott just has that something... but the production style on most of their albums was always a little light/thin for my liking (or maybe it was just my cd transfers?)

'Live and Dangerous' apparently was the first live album that actually had a significant amount of overdubs on it, so I'm not so sure they were underproducing the stuff. Despite the criticism at the time, I really dig it since it still has very much a live feel to it. Complete with Lynott asking how many people are there with some Irish in them and subsequently asking how many girls would like some of his Irish in them. During the first song ?

Maybe it comes down to your ears comparing the music to modern heavily compressed guitar-wall sh!t? Turn it up a notch, maybe that helps ?

'Live and Dangerous' was pretty cool, but Deep Purple's 'Made in Japan' was insane. Round about the same era I think?

Well I'm old enough to remember both albums being released on vinyl. My younger brother owned a copy of "Live and Dangerous" (maybe still does).

There's about 5 years between those two albums. In those days that was a long time and the music scene had moved on quite a bit between the two albums.
