Gibson Official Distributor in SA

I received an email yesterday from Marshall Music (I am on their mailing list), the email states that they are now the official importers and dealers in Gibson guitars for South Africa. They say that stock arrives early January and they are launching at Tanz cafe also in January. For more information please contact them and not me, I am just passing on what I think may be of interest to the forum members ?. I am in no way employed by or affiliated to them . Regards Mike

I'm not going to argue about the Gibson vs Tokai thing with you. We've done that and I think you're only seeing this from one side. That aside, nobody is forcing you to pay money for a Tokai or a custom made Les Paul or any other 'copies'. You have a Gibson and fortunately you'll be happy with it for the rest of your life no doubt. What I am arguing about is the fact that you seem to argue in favour of good guitars that are of original design that are made in Japan, but yet you argue very strongly against good Japanese made guitars that happen to look like a Les Paul that are made to similar exacting standards as the others. Isn't a good guitar a good guitar? You say these 'copies' should be a lot cheaper. They are a lot cheaper. There you go. You were right after all. and wrong.

Gibson is ONLY Gibson in name...
Same with Fender! It DOESNT mean you're getting the best money can buy!

So if you want to pay top dollah for a name, that DOESNT guarantee you a good guitar...
well... i suppose thats your prerogative!

I would rather have a guitar built for that kind of money... With my own signature and model number!
and it wouldnt cost an arm and a leg, or the price of some custom artist signature guitars! or some cars... or houses...

THAT would be worth spending money on, in my humble opinion!

You're making the assumption that ALL Gibsons are bad and people just buy them because they're Gibson, yet you make the same assumption that all Tokai's are good and people don't buy them cos they don't say Gibson on them. There's irony in there somewhere.

People have different taste. Surely Richard Thompson has something to say in that regard as well? people value certain brands, artists, things, above others. you Can't argue someone's value system away.

Frankly, I would rather have the name (the alignment to he who did it first, pioneers if you will) and be able to improve a poor quality product by upgrading, than have perfection but have to validate my purchase by joining a forum and saying negative things of the competing brand.

lets be honest here....... this whole debate is is made null an void by one factor............ by who puts their money where their mouth is........

least the Gibsons are NOW available locally and anyone in CT or durbs can hop a 2 hr flight and spend a day trying out the full range . then if they like try the full range of Tokais , PRS and ibanez's and yamaha's ( i didn't mention fender cos they don't really have a competitive single cut ) and make up their minds what they want and put down the hard earned cash.......... for what blows their hair back........

and lets be honest to some of us... that name on the headstock is buying into tradition ..... which lets face it is worth the money ..... for others we don't care whats on the headstock if it has the correct tone we seeking

so which store carries what makes no difference if i was dropping 20 -30 K on a guitar i would gladly go to 5 different stores and as i mentioned above even buy a plane ticket if i didn't live in gauteng cos picking a guitar is way personal ..... something one player would love and swear is the holy grail will not raise any interest from another who maybe seeks a diffent tone ....

cos arguments aside all the guitars we mention gibson /tokai/yamaha /ibanez /prs offer a competitive ,well built option to the single cut /humbucker fan ...... the choice is in the buyers hands ..like i said who must put their money where their mouth is.....

so lets just be greatfull we now have choice.... and NOT have to buy blind online.......

Being a Gibson Les Paul owner myself I think I get what you're saying and I agree with you!

To own a real Gibson Les Paul is indeed something special and I have to agree that if its a copy it will never be more than that, never mind how good it is. When I see the Gibson Les Paul logo on my guitar I love what I see, and I'm sure there are many Gibson owners here who will agree!

PS: You can indeed get the Tokai copies much cheaper by buying from the east directly, but then you have to buy online!

I own a Gibson and I absolutely love it - the instrument that is. I couldn't care what name is on the headstock - it's the playability and tone that I'm after when considering purchasing an instrument.

Indeed, once the prices of the Gibsons in SA are out (and if they're competitive) it will be the easiest thing to hop on a Kalula taxi and check them out yourself!

A little birdie told me that a new LP standard is going to go for around R20k. Still twice as much as some of the more decent copies. The second hand market will improve greatly I hope. Don't we all want a good guitar saying "Gibson" on the headstock?

Fantastic PeteM! That's YOUR opinion though, but like kp247 I DO care that it's got a Gibson Les Paul logo on the headstock, and not "Love Rock" or whatever!

I too have other fantastic guitars made by Ibanez, Kramer, Fender and Washburn but when it comes to a Les Paul Standard, it has to be a Gibson and not a copy.

As a staff member of Marshall Music Woodmead and the person who looks after Gibson in SA I just want to say that Lance Weiner is 100% correct in everything he has said on the forum and I have NO problem at all with what he has said and how he has said it. Furthermore, I don't think he was looking for sympathy AT ALL. You are welcome to call me to discuss it on 011 804 1362 if you need to as I don't really want to participate in a discussion on a forum, I just wanted to publicly clear this issue up.
