  • Gibson Official Distributor in SA

I received an email yesterday from Marshall Music (I am on their mailing list), the email states that they are now the official importers and dealers in Gibson guitars for South Africa. They say that stock arrives early January and they are launching at Tanz cafe also in January.

For more information please contact them and not me, I am just passing on what I think may be of interest to the forum members ?. I am in no way employed by or affiliated to them <besides being a long standing customer, but no law against that i there?>.

Regards

Mike

I wonder how this affects guitartone?

hmmm...super-inflated...? ? especially for Customshop models.... I mean R75000 to bring in an R9 with money upfront ! (2009) ?
                  And acoustics as well?
The Epiphone models at Marshall,CT are apparently old stock according to one of the sales staff. I think the prices of the Gibson/Epiphones are going to depend on where they get their stock from. Hopefully the market in SA has grown enough in the last couple of years to support the rigorous sales volumes that Gibson requires.

Cant wait to see some of these guitars.... ?
according to the bloke at marshall ct, thats why Gibson Guitar Corp (including Epiphone) stopped sending stuff our way. national turnover was below their target for a few years.. maybe they have scaled the target down a little due to this fun little recession we can't seem to get out of?

anyway i would love to get my hands on a Nick Valensi Riviera or a natural Casino at some stage ?

It's clear that there is SOME market for Gibsons in SA.Not just for Gibsons to fans for whom only a Gibson will do, but also to people who want a generic Les Paul or 335 style guitar with good quality and are less fussed about the name on the headstock. That market may not not be big but Gibson can either ignore that market or service it.

The slowly but constantly strengthening rand has also made it easier for companies that want to import goods from the USA.

Since Marshall are dealing directly with Gibson rather than with some 3rd party intermediary we should be hoping for some improvement on pricing.

mmmmm don't let pricing scare you till you seen it ...... just recently i had one of my students who at marshall music bought a R40 000 (marked price ) taylor for approx R23 000 give or take a grand but yes gibsons are expensive so don't expect em too cheap.... but Marshall (least the woodmead one) does offer hugely competive discounts so if they the importer....... could be a close match to overseas street price but remember shipping would be extra to a USA street price so expect a hint more than street price in states...... cos even if you bought a Gibson online you would have to pay shipping ontop of the price...... and most likely also buy some kind of insurance against loss or damage during shipping ......so there are added costs to just USA price

but hey i could be wrong i'm just looking at what i see with other gear at Marshall and expecting a similar trend............ ?

Well, let's hope for the best. It's no good having the "sole rights" to Gibson but your price is so high that only a few players can afford it.

Will Marco now be able to way lyrically about the virtues of Gibson sans an apology? ?

Fair is fair. Mr Tokai was confronted when he got close to punting his product, I don't see why Marco can go around visciously punting Gibsons that his pop just happens to be bringing in. I am a Gibson fan but even I thought that was overboard.

I was not disputing the requirement for the apology nor the fairness (which was fair) merely an attempt at humour, albeit weak it appears.
