Not really anti-shred, more anti the competitive mindset that LooneyAtTheGate mentions.
Most players who attain this level of technical facility tradeoff other musical skills to get there. The really awesome players don't tradeoff much, but still reach very high levels of playing ability. Shawn Lane could probably keep up with these guys, plus be more musical, expressive and
far more interesting compositionally.

Actually, in announcing the Apollo Program JFK quoted the mountaineer George Mallory: "Because it's there". But really it
was just a big game of one-upmanship with the Russians (politically at least). But scientific exploration never goes to waste in the long run.
