mesmerising ...how much further i gotta go to get there?
I have been playing guitar 3 years longer than Vai so for me the answer is a simple never ?
mmm but never forget Vai........ learnt guitar from joe satriani when he was at school ....... cos joe satriani was his friends tutor...so a great way to begin ......... and of course steve vai developed a 10 hour a day practise schedule yes thats no typo "10 " hours a day and when an interviewer asked him how he kept to it he replied well when he wasn't playing guitar he was in "pain" so he did it cos it was fun and cool ......
but see the short interview below 1st video is about joe satriani as a tutor and the 2nd is about his pracise routine quite well worth the watch

Opinion Alert: I watched most the G3 concert. I find that after 5 to 10 minutes of Sach , Eric Johnson, Malmsteen or Petrucci I get bored and fast forward to Vai's slot which I watch two or three times and then scoot through to the jam section at the end. The thing that distinguishes Vai from his contemporaries is his wonderful use of dynamics both in volume and tempo as well as his melodic approach to improvisation. (*oh flame me if you must I'm old enough and wise enough to take it*) ?
yeah rene his tone is awesome and never gets harsh on the ears however wild he gets........ so he's being quite clever in keeping ones attention too with his "dramatic' way of playing he puts his whole body into it ....awesome........ so yeah me too even as someone who never likes loud /harsh music loves vai...... despite he's playing so loud and insanely he 's always melodic ......
