So, I have a great jazzmaster, and its insanly BRIGHT!!!! this could be dye to its 1 meg pots!!!
Now i dont mind the brightness except for, when i play my strat after the jazzmaster it sound like a MUD machine, and seems dull.....
So How easy would it be to lower the pots to 500k????
I expect it would still be bright but just not ice picky.....
Mr-M
500K pots could help, but I suspect if you find them insanely bright you might want to change all the way down to 250K. Humbucker-equipped guitars tend to use 500K to allow more highs through to compensate for HBs' lack of highs relative to single coils. By comparison, single coil guitars tend to use 250K pots to tame some of the highs. If you can, maybe try both 250K and 500K pots. Then again, since those Jazzmaster pickups are basically big single coils and so are P90s, maybe 500K would be the way as that is the value recommended for P90 pickups?

Yeah, it is the pots - I'm not sure about yours, but the originals had 1 Meg on the volume, and 500K on the tone. No treble bleed IIRC, so turning the volume down to about 7 or 8 should also bring the highs under control, but that's not always what you want.
Anyway, swap out all the pots for 500K and it'll go a long way to curing the problem. If it's still too bright, try 250K on the volumes (maybe, try 250K tones too, but I wouldn't - a bit too much loading the pickups for me).

cool I think ia mgoing with the pots. down to 500k, I like bright just not Titanic sinking bright......
Where do i get decent tone and volume pots from ????? I feel dumb asking ☹
Also What of a bridge pickup change???? do tonerider do any jazzmaster ish pups, p 90s??????
Mr-M
Your favourite store...Music Connection! Speak to Mando in the workshop. They stock the Fender pots usually. I've gotten some there before.
Tonerider only do regular P90 pickups. Don't think those will fit properly in a Jazzmaster AFAIK. You're probably going to have to go Seymour Duncan for a Jazzmaster replacement pickup.

would it be bad to only replace one pup, what there be a hug colume drop?????
I only use the middle setting........ so bth pups
Gearhead
Dude, first replace those pots, then have a look at the pups ?
Mr-M
I'm with Gearhead. Change the pots first, then if you're still unhappy look at replacing pickups.
As for a volume drop with a replacement pickup, it would depend on the output level of the replacment vs the original. Even then, if the replacement was lower output, because you're using the middle switch position with both pickups on in parallel it might not affect the level much at all.
It will probably have to be SD or a boutique pickup winder for new Jazzmaster pickups.
